While I wholeheartedly agree Trump is a profound loser in the five “big”ways Steve points to, and the many more small, but equally destructive and damaging, ways this imperfect imbecile of a human being is unfit for the presidency and as a leader more generally, I think the tendency to focus on him is a mistake. Losers fail, and he will fail as well, he’s a disgrace. The greater challenge today, for all democracy defending Americans is to stop the destruction to the federal government and to American society at the hands of those behind a cruel, corrupt, and catastrophic Project 2025. People like Lee Zeldin, Russell Vogt, and those deeper into the crevices of this administration who are pushing the disastrous policy and institutional changes in their zealotry for a White Christian National America.

The ones who make me the most angry are the ones in power who defend Trump.

For me, it is the Democrats who approved this Regime of Misfits. When a NO would have only shown disapproval, Lee Zeldin was approved by MARK KELLY. Only Two other Democrats joined his AYE vote. These are the Democrats we need to remove. They are Trump Democrats.

Thank you for your thorough assessment of this pitiful, miserable man. He's always been a loser, but we are paying the price.

I wonder when (or even if) the US will regain the trust of the rest of the world. It's going to take a lot of effort by people who are thoughtful, educated, and well-versed in foreign affairs to heal this rift, in light of the sad fact that we put this fool and his minions in the White House not just once, but twice.

Our expertise in many fields have been decimated by a whole tribe of posturing fools, who only feel successful by getting rid of competent people. They are ALL losers.

And even though I know that there are plenty of scurrilous people in this regime who have to be held accountable and need to be prevented from ever regaining power, my favorite phrase of this piece was "Long after Donald Trump is gone...."

I agree and think it will take decades of the US acting decent for our allies to trust us again.

We are in the fight of our lives where democracy is concerned. Nobody cheered more lustily than I when I heard Orban had been defeated…and had conceded. Wow. A few days ago I was talking with a Republican friend (who does NOT support Trump) who pointed out that people who support Trump and his policies really see reality differently from most of us. How do you sideline this minority that is unwittingly supporting authoritarianism so that We, the People, in support of 250 years of democracy can flourish once again? I think Hungarians just set the example and gave us the answer. VOTE. PROTEST. SHOW UP…in BIG numbers…in undeniable hoards of liberty-loving, freedom-funding, peace-parading hoards of patriots who will not give up. It’s the only way forward, and forward we must go.

The defeat of Viktor Orban was a welcome sign that authoritarians can be defeated. This defeat was especially encouraging given that our very own authoritarian government worked to keep him in power. However, I am troubled that dt still has an approval rating of thirty-eight percent. He is a "loser" who has not lowered prices of anything and is a threat to the entire world. How does approximately a third of our country still approve of this evil madman? What does that say about our country?

This one is worse: "He keeps making a fool of himself over Iran." He's killing people over Iran. Sadly, whatever trump touches dies... Orban, who cares?... bombing a school full of little girls he should have been arrested by our own military... ICC cannot touch him in committing crimes against humanity, like they have his best buddy bibi, who he has managed to support and defend... they are both rotten to the core

I continue to be gob smacked that almost 40% of the country still supports Trump.

And yes, Trump is a loser all the way around. But in one respect, he’s going to win, because the damage that he has intentionally inflicted on the country will either last for decades, or never be able to be repaired.

BINGO!!! on every one. Thanks.

Repeat after me: "Trump didn't come out of nowhere." His first election exposed how "illiberal" (to use a word that's currently being applied "liberally" to Orbán) a significant portion of the U.S. electorate is: racist, misogynist, and dead set against the proposition that people who are non-white and non-Christian should be full citizens. It also exposed the damage done by the Citizens United decision of 2010, unleashing $$$ in politics. That didn't come out of nowhere either -- it was decided 5–4 by Republican appointees six years before Trump was elected the first time. Are we willing to come to grips with the godawful mess we're faced with now? I wish I were more optimistic. Denial isn't just a river in Egypt. It runs deep in the American psyche.

TY FOR THIS! My concern - we have so many who WILL turn out to vote there is NO doubt 'he' lost. A friend gave me a KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WHEN VOTING card she used for a program - I wish all news organizations - print & other media - would get this info out as PSAs & especially to naturalized citizens.

Maybe Oban's loss will wake up Americans that we can Dump Trump?

Mary Greenwald's avatar

Nah. They Americans who need to Dump Trump are in power already. They are Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Unless the voters refuse to return Mike Johnson to the House and Cassidy, Collins, Cornyn, Cotton, Ernst, Graham, etc are replaced with Democrats, we will continue with lies and destruction.

Excellent writing again!

Yes he is a Loser.

Excerpt

“He can only win in the midterms by cheating, motivating violence and suppressing the vote.”

⬆️We must have the will and the ways to prevent this!

And another

“A winner welcomes the will of the people. A winner does not work methodically to deny voters access to the polls in order to suppress the vote.”

Seventy seven percent! That's how many registered voters it took to oust Orbán. I'd like to see all non-maga candidates use Project 2025 to educate voters. Tell them they're running against that insane document, not necessarily the people running against Democrats. If their candidate of choice is okay with any element of project 2025, Vote Them Out. That's exactly where I think all the campaign money should go.
