I as a former Major in the USAF am most troubled that our military, officers and volunteer enlisted are cooperating and not refusing to obey obviously unlaw orders from a "Commander- in-Chief" who is a draft dodger and convicted felon. Where are the real American patriots when we need them? It is time for the military to put down their weapons, turn their ships around and tell these war criminals and their supports to go to HELL; that they are not going to obey ANY Further Unlawful Orders! Have our military and their leaders LOST ALL SELF-RESPECT, INTEGRITY, and MORALITY?They are assisting and abetting criminal acts. There refusal to obey would end this would-be-Fürer malignant fantasies and start us on the road back to morality, dignity, and world respect (which now may take a century to restore.
He wandered so far off the reservation into his occupations of U.S. cities and urban crime and for so long it offered more evidence of lapsing brain functionality. His team did their best not to look too awkward. His “weave” is getting frayed.
I was hoping the Venezuela crimes were limited to distracting us from everything else falling apart and fresh bad news (Epstein files, Jack Smith testimony). But this administration has gone full imperialist aggressor. There is no time left for those other things to wake Congress up. They need to act now! It is no longer (if it ever was) hyperbole to fear that Trump will carry on with his other absurd threats such as against Mexico, Canada, Greenland and even triggering WWIII.
So right, Todd. I believe this may only be the beginning. I fear too many Americans, unexplainably, will not be opposed to these imperialist strong arm tactics. And many, non voter types, will not care.
Trump has succeeded in turning back the clock to the days of national conquests of “lesser” nations for the enrichment of the conquerors. Back to the days when the CIA engaged on covert regime change, which never succeeded and brought condemnation from around the world to America. No longer a free democratic republic but a kingdom on is way to empire. I hope the 77million people who voted for him have kids in the military who were (and will continue to be) placed in danger so that they can feel the fear the rest if us feel over the murder of our beloved USA.
I agree with what you say, Linda, but the US has been an empire for a long time now. The US media even back in the day did not report on many of our overseas operations, but the US Government's actions south of the border and in Africa and the Middle East have caused the "anti-American" sentiment which will now again spread like an oil slick.
I appreciate your sacrifice. I could not afford to watch (health-wise). I have emailed Senators Durbin and Duckworth asking what they are doing TODAY to combat this thuggery. An email to Quigley asked how many Republican colleagues he talked to today to Impeach Trump, Rubio and Bondi. It is today the Democrats need to be acting. If they do not, we need to send them home putting Democracy fighters in office.
I agree with every single word you wrote. You expressed every thought I had about this. Congress and Americans must act in opposition to this action and proposed action to take over the Venezuelan oil fields.
Yes, this all absolutely appalling, but none of it should come as a surprise based on all the preparations that have been going on in clear sight. Apart from all the other ramifications, this excursion into Venezuela is sending a clear signal to Xi Jinping that it’s okay to seize Taiwan and to Putin that he is justified in trying to usurp Ukraine. The bottom line is that we have no choice but to rid ourselves of our insane and utterly immoral regime – and to do so now.
It's clear, however, that the regular guardrails (impeachment, the 25th Amendment) are not holding because of the cowards acting in subservient collusion. Nor is it sufficient to wait for the midterms. At the very least, think of the damage that this blithering idiot of a “President” can do to the whole world in the meantime. The more likely scenario, in any case, is that those elections are going to be called off under the pretext of some emergency declaration or other. I mean, why would this character who is hellbent on establishing a dictatorship risk losing power through something as arcane as elections?
Please allow me, Steven, to renew the call for what we truly need to cope with the ongoing insanity: namely, a coalition of leaders from all walks of life – politicians, administrators, senior military personnel, scholars, artists, historians, writers – to stand together as one in order to spearhead the charge to bring this regime to an end as well as to pick up the pieces and provide proper governance once it falls.
If the people of Bulgaria were able to rise up and overthrow their regime last month, why are we unable to do so here? Our complacency will kill us.
Maybe loose your scorn on the Republicans who voted for Trump. It is the VOTERS who elected Trump. Those who did not vote would have voted Trump and truly given him a mandate!
Beyond appalling. I’m dealing with domestic and health issues, and hadn’t realized this had happened. For the sake of my sanity I need to worry about things I have control over, and not this. But you all, who still have some energy left, let’s take our country back!
Thank you for your clarity, Mr. Beschloss! No bottom indeed. No depravity too low. No hatred too deep for everyone. We are now worse than Russia. Why? Because our congress should know better. Well, it's been a wonderful 249 years. We need some actual intelligent law abiding adults in the room.
I am furious, appalled and really scared about what this means for this country. First, every accusation lobbed at Maduro and his illegitimate regime could also apply to our present U.S. government. Every position of power is filled with gleeful sadists and subservient flying monkeys. We have no congress. We have no congressional leadership. We have no Democratic leadership in either house. Feckless, useless, meek, and weak.
Sure trump and his puppet masters have filled the ranks with loyalists-just like Maduro. It's unfortunate that Americans stupidly voted this guy in twice. I think every Trump supporter, the stay at homes and the 3rd party voters stink. It is also true that some of those trumpers have changed their minds, but there are still over 30% who love every minute of the brutal, inhumane, tough guy regime that has unfolded.
American democracy has proved to be vulnerable all along filled with weak people incapable of living up to the moment. Two hundred fifty years of what, exactly? We need to start over.
To play on your last paragraph: it’s our America; not his. Let’s act like it.
Exactly. We will not stay silent.
As Liza Donnelly points out, if trump can do this, Putin can kidnap Zelensky, and china can take over Taiwan.
That was Putin’s plan at the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Yes, this could revive it.

It will be another good decade to stay home.

congress is on break until next week.
Thank you, Mr. Beschloss. Well said.
We won't be celebrating the birthday of America this year as much as it's demise.
Not celebrating, rather mourning.

There truly is no bottom.
Thanks to all who chose not to vote in the last election.
Why did I not emigrate after the 2nd Bush was sworn in.
America as I knew it is dead.
