There was never any doubt that Kamala Harris would win the popular vote. It’s what shenanigans Trump & Co. have cooked up for the electoral college and/or vote certification. Trump has, after all, a “little secret” he’s eager to unveil with Mike Johnson, protector of white Christianity and supervised porn.
There has been much discussion about the House determining the outcome of the election, but the new electoral law enacted after January 6th has taken all of the dangers of that happening and making it nearly impossible for that to happen.
It covers a lot of ground. But until recently Johnson gave the standard GOP line. He would follow the certification process if the election was free & fair. Now he is greatly enjoying the attention & concern “the little secret” made. His claim is the ‘secret’ is a GOTV strategy. Now he says he will follow the Constitution to a “T”.
Bottom line, the GOP still loves to stir up questions & mistrust regarding elections.
Thank you, Steven, for this shot in the arm reminder. It can feel a herculean effort to keep the chaos and lies at bay, but we must remember that the chaos and lies are intentional, designed to diminish us and make us distrust our power. If our voices, votes, and actions weren’t so consequential, there would be no reason to try so hard to oppose them.
The Speaker needs investigated for taxes/audit. Mitch McConnell who knows what all he's done. A bunch needs unpacking. With people in McConnell district being so poor and keep voting him in, it makes no sense. They vote against themselves.
Like every other state, McConnell has his seat in the Senate due to voters statewide. Most people in the state are not living in poverty. The per capita income average is low at $34,000 compared to $42,000 for the US. The cost of living in KY is about 11% lower than the US average. KY receives a lot of federal money. Although per person it is less than RI, NM, WY, MT, ND, NY, LA and about the same as MA & VT.
People do not view it as voting against themselves. They vote for him because he gets $$ for their roads & bridges; grants for their law enforcement agencies & substance abuse centers etc. etc. He has a well oiled statewide election machine.
He is in large part the reason Elaine Chao received a presidential appointment from every GOP president beginning with Bush/Quayle & Chao as chairperson of the Federal Maritime Commission in 1988. (Her family does have that successful Chinese shipping business.)
1989, deputy secretary, Dept of Transportation. 1992, she was over the Peace Corp. Under George W Bush she was Secretary of Labor. Under Trump, Secretary of Transportation. While she was Sec of Transportation, KY was the only state that had a Dept of Transportation liaison.
I'm blown away by what Kamala Harris has pulled off in the last few months, and that includes her choice of running mate. (I can't wait to see her cabinet nominations!) I avoid polls and most pundits and am actually feeling pretty optimistic.
“And by the way, as Democratic strategist and fellow Substack author Simon Rosenberg has noted, the pro-Trump propaganda of inevitability has been aided by junk polls flooding the zone. “It’s ridiculous that Democrats are being asked to accept the integrity of polling averages when a plurality or a majority of the polls are coming from right-aligned organizations,” he said in the last few days.”—-
I believe as you say they use the tighter polls to cushion their loss with accusations of Fraud! As he did before by claiming he’d won before the mail ballots were counted.—-
I still wish we would abolish the expensive convoluted Electoral College!
From your lips to god’s ears. I have been crying daily, woke up at 4 am this morning unable to go back to sleep thinking of a dystopian future of hate and fear mongering.
After seeing the lines in St. Charles County, Missouri this week (first time ever no reason absentee voting) I’m beginning to feel better. Only two locations, but lines around one of them, and traffic backed up on the highway trying to exit to the other. Missouri does not have friendly or easy voting. Amendment 3, to reinstate abortion and women’s health care is going to be bigger than they thought. Hope the printers are printing more ballots as I type. Thank you for your calming voice, Steven.
The aftermath is scary. Seems like MAGA Mike Johnson is scheming with Orange Hitler to throw the process to the House, where they can steal the election.
Because of new laws enacted after January 6th the idea that the House can decide an election is infinitesimally small. Good articles throughout SubStack on this today. See Robert Hubbell in particular.
Thank you. Personally, I am avoiding polls for the next week. The only “poll” that means anything is on November 5. I live in California, where my vote doesn’t count for much, but I dropped my ballot off today as there are many local issues and races that do count. Thank you again Steven, for the needed reminder that we got this.
That is so true! I heard about a focus group in Michigan which the New York Times with its headline was trying to convince readers there was some sort of a “trend”. What BS!
Same here in MA. The deadline is past for mailing postcards, so I'm reading up on my state's ballot questions. I vote on election day because I'm a poll worker. OTOH, I worked a shift for early voting this past Saturday but chose not to vote then. <g>
Ditto! I've been writing with Postcards to Voters since late 2017. I've learned so much about candidates running down-ballot in all sorts of places. Since the summer I've written to support candidates in Michigan (2), New York state (2), Arizona, and Nebraska.
Yes, let's not believe the polls. Most of them, as you say, are funded by rightwing organizations and are designed to sow confusion. They are also intended to bolster the case that Trump is going to make post-election that there is no way he could have lost and that the election was rigged. He'll be counting on this lie to summon enough of his supporters to cause mayhem. He's not really fighting to be President, he is fighting to stay out of jail.
Thank you. I needed that. I’ve been forwarding Simon’s and Rick Wilson’s encouraging messages to my sister in law who is scared to death. This one will be next. Meanwhile on Earth 2, Steve Bannon is out of jail and already causing trouble. He’s saying that Trump should declare victory on election night if his totals are like 2020.
These guys never have an original thought. Roger Stone advised declaring victory no matter what happened in 2020. He’s on video saying it. The Jan 6 Committee had it.
(Their internal polling is not so skewed. The trump people knew in 2016 and 2020 they could lose.)
— “I really do suspect it'll still be up in the air. But when that happens the key thing to do is to claim victory," Stone said. "Possession is nine-tenths of the law — no, we won, **** you. Sorry, over, we won, you're wrong, **** you.” —
Thank you Steven. If people would understand that worrying about a matter doesn’t in any way help, then stop wasting energy and giving your power away. I believe this is why so many people have volunteered to knock doors, write postcards, make phone calls, stuff envelopes, work on campaigns either local or national or do any of the myriad things that are required to mount a successful campaign. Kamala knew she didn’t have much time to rally people to her side but she did have a plan for people to stay busy and, as she or maybe it was Tim who said it, “leave it all on the field”.
Since I was in no position to do any of the above this time, I’ve donated to campaigns. However when Helene flattened my hometown of Asheville, I did have to redirect some funds; but I’ve contributed something to the cause. So now, I wait; not in fear but in hope that more have seen the light than want the dark. We are living in interesting times.
Thank you, Steven. As I shared a few days ago, I believe the polls to be inaccurate and the true measure to be more like 55/45 for Harris. That said, we must be prepared for the deluge of rogue election officials' mass refusal to certify election results. Though in-place processes can ensure eventual certification, it appears that the Trump/Johnson "big secret" is to encourage delay of certification forcing a contingent election.
Exactly what I needed to talk me off the ledge. Thank you Steven!

I know, I know. One step at a time, we have to get through this election first and hope against hope for a blue trifecta that will send Mike Johnson and Mitch McConnell packing. But, boy do we need election reform. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/29/opinion/election-night-trump-harris.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

It is remarkable.
Thank you for this:
Excerpt from your helpful “soliloquy”——

I've been ignoring all polls from the beginning. Garbage. Imho, you can't reach a representative group of voters in any reliable way these days.
I've sent many hundreds of postcards to voters this year! Calming my fears with action!
Ditto! I've been writing with Postcards to Voters since late 2017. I've learned so much about candidates running down-ballot in all sorts of places. Since the summer I've written to support candidates in Michigan (2), New York state (2), Arizona, and Nebraska.

And to discourage people from voting because “it’s a done deal.” Blah blah blah.
Then the skewed averages get oxygen from free press coverage.
Polls are clickbait.

I continue to appreciate this community during this season. It is hard to be alone during this end game. So thank you, Steven, for the pep talk.
