If “our country is a disaster, a laughingstock all over the world!”, as Trump asserted, it is specifically because of Trump. The minute he was elected, the world knew the U.S. had lost stature, lost credibility as a world leader.

When I read that statement, your comment immediately came to mind.

I often wonder that. Also, why aren't elected officials and those in responsible positions saying he lies? A few do, but generally there's little outrage. That's at least as scary as what 45/47 is saying.

Trump finds the sunshine of opportunism in every dark moment when he can use it to sell a hate story and pull his mob closer to his dictatorial ambitions. Who else in history did that again?!

Finding a place to find facts and the truth will be critical during the next four years. That's why I'm a subscriber of many Substack columns. I doubt the legacy media will care about Trump rants and will cover them like news.

I subscribe to many Substacks too. I know I’ll find truth on them. I don’t have any corporate media subscriptions, I don’t trust them.

I find myself in a similar situation. Lots of good substacks with good commenters. But you always need to apply critical thinking.

Legacy news media is now almost thoroughly corrupted by corporate ownership

James, I use a Substack thread like Steve's to hear what others have to say.

As for "critical" thinking ... it is the only "thinking" worthy of the burned calories.

James M. Coyle's avatar

Exactly so, Michael. I grew up at a time when we thought what the news reported was true, so we just absorbed it without thinking much. No more. Even when we started looking at things critically, we still thought the news was basically honest. No more.

Absolutely Nancy. All commercial (mass) media covers "news" as propaganda. I have cancelled all subscriptions but for one big daily. I use their emailed blurbs to note stories that seem big enough to merit deep research.

As long as channels like Substack remain un-censored they are the avenue for discussion, information, and a little venting on occasion.

just an observation.........trump has been a pathological liar his entire life. When he entered the world of politics, every single lie should have been called out. Every one. Instead, media seemed to think it was humorous or something. As a parent, and a retired teacher, I knew that was a sure recipe for the behavior to escalate. Look where we are today. Articles saying he lied. That's news?????????????

Joyce Vance, who writes the excellent Substack Civil Discourse, is compiling an ongoing list of his lies and transgressions called The Democracy Index. She's only just started so it isn't available yet, but I highly recommend her. She's a lawyer who provides insight into current events from a legal perspective.

If we all had voted (not just 60% of us) in 2016, trump would have marched back up his golden escalator and Hillary Clinton would be completing her second term as president of the United States of America.

If we all had voted (not just 60% of us) this past November, trump would be looking at his remaining years spent in prison for his felony convictions and Kamala Harris would be the second female president.

As Dr. Maya Angelou famously said , "When someone tells you who and what they are, believe them." The toxic orange narcissist is proud of his nastiness or too stupid to appreciate how he appears to other people.

We Americans are, by and large, pathetic, apathetic, sheep.

Present company excepted.

Thank you for calling this what it is, lying. I'm listening to a newscaster I respect refer to Trump's New Orleans statement as "misinformation". No, it's lying, plain and simple. We will not be able to trust information about our food, water, medications, or public health data, to name just a few. He even lies about the weather! I'm very worried about where we will be able to get critically important accurate information about subjects that affect our safety as a nation.

Sen Kennedy’s appearance was a rumpled; his statements were disjointed political potshots and innuendo. His behavior was weird. When he stepped away from the podium he stood there rubbing his face with his hands.

Laughingstock? Disaster?

Certainly the former and likely the latter.

Sentient people in the "developed" first world see the stupid GARBAGE we happily choose as our "leadership". They could (should) assume we are ignorant, hateful, fools.

Those who live in nominal democracies, and understand history a bit, know that a full forty percent of Americans don't vote. Never have. After 2016, and this past November, I am certain they never will. I've no respect for those who chose not to vote. I've nothing to share with them. Should we pass in the street, I'll be personable and courteous. I will continue to live next to them.

If their home is ablaze I will call the fire service and keep my roof wet.

Personally, I am proud to know our history (all of it). I honored my fathers service in the Ardennes by serving in 1972-1974. He thought I was a fool (I was) but understood why I felt I must enlist. The two of us never talked about our combat experiences. I'm glad to have survived my service and had the opportunity to love dad for another fifty years.

I'm glad he did not live to see another Trump "presidency".

James M. Coyle's avatar

I figured out a while back that the concept of objective truth does not exist for Trump. So the default position on any Trump statement is that he is lying. If he ever says "The sun will rise in the east tomorrow morning, be prepared for the Apocalypse.

FOX and their maga friends know whoever tells the first story makes the first impression. They know, changing the story / impression later has less of an impact than the initial lie.

That’s why the truth must speak louder and longer than the lie.

We must remain clear eyed that America's first "supreme leader" will attempt to define what is true 24/7. Finding ways to deny and resist this will be how we the people can save our Democracy. Steven (and others) has created a place to do just that! One man will only have that power if we give it to him...I will not!
