Thanks for this post.

This cynical opportunism regarding Israel seems unprecedented to me. And if the Republican Absolutist goal is to criticize Democrats, then as events unfold, I could see Republicans interfering with support for Israel if it made a Democratic administration look weak. It's very scary.

While we must maintain our support for Ukraine and Israel we must not weaken our resolve to make sure that a wannabe dictator does not get elected. When will a more cogent and aggressive Democratic marketing effort showing how 90% of those who vote for a Republican president will lose their current freedoms just as Democratic voters will?

I’m not so certain fighting crazy with crazy is the way to go. I’d also suggest that no amount of vigorous messaging of the sort you’re describing will break through to these G.O.P. “bomb throwers.” They only seem to see/hear/understand the subversive message being fed them.

This is not to say we throw our hands up and give up, but we have to understand fighting crazy with crazy might make us feel good, but is rarely effective in the long run.

I just wish they could find a way to bombard everyone with truth, and facts and actively debunking all the BS that flies around daily. I wish I had answers. It's hard to reach people who only consume righ+-wing infotainment for their "news." I think the Democrats need a lot of help in the marketing/PR department.

This whole atrocity just kept getting worse by the hour. I would turn off tv for a while only to turn tv on again in a few hours to see the numbers of killed and numbers of taken hostage increase and increase and increase. There was a lot of talk about failure of intelligence. I kept questioning that in my mind, as I know that Israel is so steeped in intelligence because of what the site of Israel has had to endure. I don't engage in twitter any longer s I am philosophically opposed to how it is operated. However, twitter still sends me emails. I saw a tweet by you @StevenBeschlkoss about how the GOP was making political hay of this horrendous event by blaming Joe Biden. I didn't read the article to learn the details. Then I saw a tweet by Rob Reiner. I opened that tweet because the first few words were VERY ALARMING. He stated, and maybe I knew this at the time, but as a defense mechanism chose to forget, that Trump shared Israeli intelligence with Laravov, who then probably passed it on to Putin, who either acted on it himself or passed it on to Iran. I shuddered and felt sick; and I cried. That cult leader, who tried to destroy our democracy with his lies, who has been suspected of sharing classified information, actually did share Israeli intelligence with the enemy. Again the narcissist needed to show how he was important and had access to information that others didn't. However, in this case we actually see the atrocities that resulted from his lack of holding on to classified information. Passing Israel intelligence to the Russians, could answer the question I had all day about how there could be such a failure of Israeli intelligence. The blood of over 1,000 innocent Israelis and so far 9 Americans is on his hands. His ago is not fit for the office of President of the US. His inability to deal with classified information and foreign intelligence further adds to his disqualification for ever holding that office again. He has personally destroyed lives and families and a country that has a long road of recovery in front of it. Of course few, if any, GOP will speak out. They are such wimps and so afraid of being bullied by Trump and so afraid of losing his cult followers whose votes are needed by the GOPO in the next general election. This is SUCH A HORRENDOUS SITUATION !!!

Sad indeed. And, as long as we allow men like Putin, 45, Netanyahu (I am not siding with Hammas! Violence can't be the answer), Saudi's bin Salman, and Xi to reach power there will be no peace, perhaps not even humans on Earth. We can no longer afford these treacherous men. Unless citizens get off their duffs and throw these men out the pain and sadness will increase as we struggle to solve the climate crisis. We need more wisdom, empathy, and humility for crying-out-loud. I'm thankful for Joe Biden!!!

As a person born of the Jewish faith, I understand completely the feelings of many Jewish people in the US regarding the recent attack by Hamas on Israel. After WWII Jewish people felt they needed a country of their own to prevent the holocaust from every happening again. We all supported this and wanted a Jewish state. In my opinion the placement of the state was always wrong. Taking land from another state to give to Israel the Balfour Declaration was misguided.

Israel has been at war with its neighbors for as long as it has existed.

Israel has carried out major military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon during the past four decades without formal declarations of war. This time Netanyahu and his Likud party are under pressure to stop the civil unrest in Israel due their policy to limit the supreme court of Israel. Netanyahu has been under investigation for over 4 years of corruption. The drive by Netanyahu's nationalist-religious coalition to change the justice system has led to unprecedented protests, stirred concern for Israel's democratic health among Western allies, and bruised the economy.

I ask why the US media has not reported on what has been happening over the past 10 months with Israel attacks on Palestine? Israel, has attacked Palestine over 12 times in 2023, killing over 112 people including children. The US media never reports on these attacks, or the increased expansion of settler’s homes being built on Palestine land. Israel has an internal civil conflict for over a year now. Citizens are going to the streets to object to Netanyahu’s government. The US media never reports on the internal conflict. Hamas has a right to defend Palestine from Israel repeated attacks. The declaration of war is to deflect from the civil unrest and make arrest of Israeli people within the country, who are organizing against Netanyahu. Our President has NO right in insert support for either party. The United States government cannot take sides in the middle east. There are too many players, and we should not be playing international favoritism in a region that is so volatile. Israel has become a fascist government the US should not be supporting a fascist regime.

Your title "The Need For Humanity" is all we need. It encompasses everything in life. From the MAGA Republicans, Trump, anti-democratic and insane leaders, et al. In today's world, an almost seemingly naive concept but the most basic need, almost at the root cause of evil. If everyone practiced humanity, wars would stop, people would work together for the common good in relatable ways. Sadly, my Pollyanna thought for the day.

The nation is in crisis. What happens in the USA profoundly effects what happens in the rest of the World. One of our two major political parties seems to be working to create chaos and to destabilize our government and our society. Republicans do not seem willing or able to offer anything that is good. As an institution, the GOP and perhaps the vast majority of its members appear to be morally and intellectually bankrupt. If they cannot be part of a solution, then they are a serious problem.

The world is engulfed in chaos and there are those leaders who approach this with valor. The other leaders spread disinformation. Our focus should be to cite the truth.

It is devastating to watch and read about what Hamas is doing: torture, beatings, taking hostages, killing innocent people indiscriminately. There is no reason to do any of this to civilians!

When my son had to sign up for the draft in the 1980s , a precaution against the Soviets, what worried me always was a war in the Middle East, an area of conflict throughout time-Alexander the Great in 334BCE, Rome in 66BC, Byzantine Empire in 330 AD, Ottoman Empire in 1453 for 600 years until after WW I when Britain and France carved it up, mainly for oil. Britain was convinced to divide Palestine into two countries, Israel and Palestine. One would think after the cataclysmic events viciously inflicted upon the Jews during WW II, they would feel compassion towards their fellow man, but instead, it seems the leaders , perhaps, probably, from anger, used their superior power to dominate their neighboring Palestine, committing atrocities, apartheid, land stealing and destruction, denial of citizenship, etc. The US does not recognize Palestine; it is considered a non-member of the UN. The US has never really informed the world about the plight of Palestinians, only Israelis.

Enter Iran, known as Persia until 1935. The last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ruled his people with cruelty and secret police. He befriended Israel (today, Iran holds the largest number of Jews after Israel) and the US. He was forced to flee-to the US. The Ayatollah Khomeini declared an Islamic Republic, a theocracy, with a hatred for the US, even taking Americans hostage and, of course, Israel.

Enter 9/11 & Donald Rumsfeld who pushed the lie that Iraq had a hand in weapons of mass destruction leading Bush 43's misadventure into its overthrow, leading to raising its enemy, Iran, into first place. Indeed, Palestine now had an important ally to force clashes against Israel and support any groups with that in mind. Thus, Hamas.

So, who is to blame? Appeasing Chamberlain, murderous Hitler, the push for freedom of colonized countries after WW II, Truman's influence on Britain, Zionist activity, the UN, Arab alliances, President Bush, America's preference to get US Jewish vote, Iranian hatred, Netanyahu's fascism and support from the right . Oh, my ! Sigh ! Talk about complicated and complicity !

There is evil in this world. It is happening in Ukraine and Israel. The US is in the middle of it all.

Crazy Republicans are blaming Biden for all of it. Would have never happened under me says trump who declares China afraid of him because they call him "Sir" which they don't Biden.

Since the US is always seeking new frontiers, let working it out with Iran somehow be a priority. It recently tried, freeing American hostages, causing Greene, Gaez, Blackburn etc all over twitter spitting out slander.

Will turmoil ever end? In Israel, fighting will occur. Killings, atrocities will occur. A truce will occur. Until next time. In America, not until trump has descended to Dante's ninth circle of Hell.

On some days - Stop the world, I want to get off !!

@StevenBeschloss, I think you are being your generous self in saying that the role of Russia in all of this is unclear. Is there backup for Rob Reiner's tweet that 45 shared Israeli intelligence with he Russians? Is there no end to what he will do to feed his narcissistic self, even hurting Israel and the Jews and the world by sharing Israeli intelligence? Will his cult say that it is ok what he did, if, in fact, he did share Israeli intelligence? Is anti-semitism still alive and well today because irresponsible people like 45 feed it to his cult followers who will follow him into the deepest and darkest trenches of life. This is a very scry time. I would like to see backup by @RobReiner. I would like to see 45 respond to the comments by @RobReiner. I would like to see a response by Jarred Kushner to the alleged crime of sharing Israeli intelligence that 45, his father-in-law supposedly did. And where is Ivanka? Could she weigh in on this also.

The scary thing is that Israeli democracy is as endangered by its right wing as we are and for the same reasons: ultra-nationalism. We need to tailor our support of Israel to combatting that as well as finding and eradicating terrorists breeding by capitalizing on what the ultra-rightest are doing to Gaza and the West Bank.

Is it beyond the realm of possibility that the same breeding of hatred might arise in the Mexican camps where asylum seekers are stuck because the US cannot come up with a rational response to inevitable immigration flight from gang and climate crises in their own countries? Instead, our Right just screams "invasion" with nary a suggestion about what to do about it that would minimize the chance of that breeding.

The precarious reality is that the ultra-right have meaningfully worsened the conditions, but none of that justifies the barbarism of the hateful Hamas. Decent Palestinians are horrified, too.

Susan Linehan's avatar

of course not. Why does it seem to be the case that suggesting Israeli policies might have been a factor mean "justifying" Hamas. Explanation is not excuse. If we fail to consider the reasons for behavior, we are hamstrung by our ignorance.

How exactly is cutting off food, water, electricity, fuel, and medical help to 2.8 million Gaza residents a rational response to Hamas? I can almost hear right now ordinary people changing their minds to support of Hamas. Not me. I have access to all of those and can objectively evaluate Hamas as god-awful.. But I can tell you that if the GOP cut off all that to Seattle because it was "too liberal" and voted for Biden I'd feel way more murderous about the GOP.
