The trauma continues until there is justice. Living in these times where the past 40 years the propaganda of the right wing billionaires project of taking over the airwaves: radio, television, social media and newspapers, is reversed, truth will not prevail. The truth must be repeated at least as much as the lies. Tragically it might take a couple of generations, although we are the ones to begin the challenge for change. Your work is seminal Steven, thank you.

I share your profound dismay over the fact that so many Americans simply decided to "move on" from the events of that horrific day and the assault from within on our democracy. But I do take solace in one thing, that I wrote about in my own post today comparing Jan. 6, 2021 to Jan. 6, 2025: https://craiglazzeretti.substack.com/p/what-jan-6-2025-will-prove-about

"But for now, we can and should take one measure of solace in the events that occur today at the U.S. Capitol, however disgusted we may be by the choice of our fellow citizens on Nov. 5. The party that will respect the will of the voters will emerge morally superior to the one that tried to destroy U.S. democracy four years ago. And that moral superiority will provide a strength of will and purpose that no amount of money by America’s new class of oligarchs can buy, no amount of media disinformation and right-wing propaganda spread by the likes of Fox News can extinguish, no amount of cynicism and flawed political punditry can obscure.

"I don’t know what the future will hold, but I do believe that those Americans and institutions that can rightfully claim the moral high ground are in a much better position to ultimately prevail in long struggles for justice."

Reading all the newsletters like your's recalling the events of that day, I am getting angry all over again. To watch that criminal ascend to the presidency again is something I thought I would never see. The fact that he was not held accountable for the many crimes he committed following the 2020 election will forever be the greatest miscarriage of justice committed on the American people. I still remember the horror I felt that day as I watched his supporters attack the Capitol on his orders. I fear for our republic, but am even more resolved to be in this fight to defeat the MAGA movement once and for all.

Thank you, Steven. We can’t change the propaganda machine active in every corner of our media and country, but we can hold fast to the truth, and we must…if for no other reason than to make sure that our recorded history is NOT revised and sane-washed by Trump and the insidious slow-roll of Trumpism throughout the media.

My personal opinion is that Trump is staunchly defending the insurrection and insurrectionists because he wants to use the dismissal of his January 6 case to its full advantage by staying in office and assuming the presidency again in 2028. If he can convince enough supporters that 2020 was stolen from him he can convince them that he is ‘owed’ another term. I also believe that this is why JD Vance made the comment about just ignoring judicial rulings. Although John Roberts was not pleased with this comment, and did call it out, the court is responsible for this new American monarchy. I think Trump is attempting to again soften the ground for a third term. Nothing would surprise me.

For as long as I live, the images of that day will remain in my mind’s eye. I spent those hours on the phone with my sister who lives halfway across the country from me. We cried together as the Capitol was breeched, and worried about the Vice President and the Speaker being in immediate danger. We kept asking “Where is the National Guard?” It was obvious to us that the former president had encouraged these violent men and women to attack the people’s house. When he finally realized that they wouldn’t accomplish his goal of overturning the election, he sent them home, telling them he loved them and that they were special.

I have never been so disgusted by the behavior of a supposedly adult man, he behaved like a small child whose favorite toy had been taken away.

My sister and I did the same. I was literally comatose for three days. My husband had to cajole me to get out of bed.

January 6 is always and will forever be 12th Night.... the 3 "wise" men were lost in the desert because they couldn't/wouldn't ask for directions... tfg isolated his followers via msm with a very loud angry threatening platform to keep them from asking questions. If the core is racism & paranoia not even Baby Jesus can save you... and certainly not a woman running for president ... I'd say "black woman" but Jesus was black & a Jew but shhhhhhhhh don't tell them they are sucking their thumbs and reading the old testament vengence instructions.... Geesh am I angry by any chance?

Thank you. Great article. The truth. Fox News and Murdoch's properties are a cancer. I have not and will not watch or listen to them.

I'm frightened and fearful. Look what they did to Paul Pelosi, Nancy's husband. The guy entered his home and severely injured him. It's just sick. It has all happened because of right-wing propaganda.

An excellent recap of the horror of Jan 6, 2020 and the heinous lies that were accepted and repeated by the members of Congress who had the opportunity and obligation to put an end to it all. It was all too easy but for the many of our representatives who cowered under the fear of Trump and their own greed to remain in power. I remember the day that Argentina lost their status as a Democracy and acknowledged the same fate being possible for the United States of America. But naively, I never thought it would happen . . . until it did!

Slight correction: Kevin McCarthy was House Minority Leader in 2021 when he went to Mar a Lago to kiss CF45's fat butt. Strategic, yes, in preparation for the 2022 midterms, but ultimately the opening salvo in Kev's political demise. I don't hear his name bandied about as a potential cabinet appointee come this January 21, even though he said after he was kicked out, opps, resigned, from the House that he'd gladly serve in another trump admin. Guess Donnie doesnt like losers.

True to the point that everything trump touches dies. I hope and pray Democracy is not one of them.

We will turn this around by building something for which people will vote: a solid, broadly beneficial platform that is sold by a charismatic candidate. We have approached it as candidate only. The platform became a meaningless afterthought. I would leave it there for 2024. Talk about sucks. We had a charismatic candidate sans platform. We must turn this around. We must build a platform that lifts, fires up, and arms the strongest movement of our lives. Otherwise YOU bequeath your children and grandchildren their inherited, voiceless servitude to a dictatorship. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/start-our-movement?r=3m1bs

Thank you for your amazing thoughts about this day of treason. Americans should hang their heads in shame. Then be grateful that we have been given the grace to have a chance to save what is left of our democracy.

Steven,

No we can’t. We must always remember and remind others. Please be safe and watch your six. It’s getting dangerous for all of us in the opposition.

Your insightful writing is a treasure. This horrible day in history unfolded and I wanted my mind to erase it and believe it wasn't real. I did not believe this could happen in our U.S.A. There are many Americans trying to understand what the new rules may be. Readers of history have seen flashes of reflections of this era before. What may be different and unpredictable is human behavior.
