We are witnessing media companies, journalists and billionaires bowing down to Trump and his hostile takeover—seeking access, favors and security. They are doing us a favor.
Cowards, all. “Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.” - Frederick Douglass, 1857.
i can't tell you how many times i received a notice that my package was delivered only to have it arrive days later - and the company (whom I called) had no comment really - let's see what happens in the next few days, they said, and of course it did come - don't tell me it's here when it isn't.
Yay for this column. I see two things. We, the bit players, can do damage at our local level - write letters to the editor of our small hometown papers, join the groups who already are working on the next election cycle. Maybe the opposite of “obey in advance” could be “death by a thousand cuts.” Keep pointing out every failure - the price of eggs not going down, the first case of polio, or increase in measles, food poisoning because of deleted regulations. 2. Trump does not respect grovelers — sooner or later, he will turn on them, as he did Pence. I look forward to it.
Terrific piece…cogent and to the point. I, too, am enraged by the steady stream of people who should both know better and do better, capitulating to this evil and cowardly person who has the audacity to call himself a leader. The mud slide has begun, taking with it expensive pieces of political real estate. We may never get it back. I’m with you all the way!
Are we finally ready to pay serious attention to the unelected fourth branch of government: Big Money? It's easy to fixate on billionaires, but this has been going on since "billionaire" was an abstract place no one could get to, like Pluto. The First Amendment says that *Congress* can make no law abridging freedom of the press, but it doesn't say anything about corporations and the mega-rich.
We've been watching the consolidation of "the media" for decades now. Plutocrats like Bezos and Soon-Shiong have been buying up key outlets. People in large swaths of the country have to work hard to find reliable news -- and most people have neither the leisure time nor the skills to work that hard. Lately some encouraging green shoots have been emerging through the desolate media landscape, and thank heavens for that: ProPublica, Courier, Substackers like yourself, and more. I like to think of them all as heirs to the samizdat that managed to keep truth alive in places where repression was more obvious and more brutal than it is here (yet).
Ooh, another great word of the day, samizdat! Let us extract words calling us to justice, integrity, equality, liberty and fraternity whilst buying and sharing banned books and tracts. Thomas Paine would be proud. Surreptitious inscriptions arise, ye voices of the earth! Thank you. Very well done.
Though we should keep in mind, with so few sources, it is easy for nefarious entities to parcel us up into a box labeled: Enemies. People who know what we are doing and thus may oppose us. They now have the resources to collect this information.
I think of this every time I click the heart. Then I click it anyhow.
I am 75 years old, and I have fought hard in this life. I was told by my mother that I ruined her life be being born. I married a jerk that I met while he was drunk under a streetlight after I came home from teaching a church class because I did not think that anyone else would ever want me. I managed an insurance sales office , very well, only to be told that I could not be the new manager because I was a woman but that if I married the person that i had hired and trained, they would make him the manger and i would benefit from the income. Life is not fair to women and we need to fight harder! We are not slaves or servants. We are human beings who deserve rights!
Thank you for sharing your story. Unfortunately it says so much about what happened on Nov. 5. I truly believed our country was ready to move forward in some ways that showed we were ready to accept freedom and justice for all Americans.
But sadly I was wrong. This election was a slap in the face to women (and some men) who have fought for and believed America should provide freedom for everyone. As a 77 year old man, I'm ashamed that our country is still fighting for equal rights as well as, ending racism for ever. My heart is broken for my wife, my daughters, and granddaughters. I will stand arm in arm with anyone who will speak out and not accept the status quo for another 4 years of darkness and ignorance. Our Democracy and the women in our county are worth fighting for.
At times I wonder what our county would be like if it was run by women. One thing I believe is certain, they would not be focused on accumulating wealth, power, and taking revenge on anyone who disagrees with them.
Yes, I wonder that also. I believe that there would be a lot more kindness and consideration , and that the government would be much more effective. Just who is it that manages most of the budgets in the country? My husband sure could not have handled the budget! All he wanted to do was spend!
I just don't get it. What is it about Trump that dazzles? The Republicans had many chances to stop this bulldozer. If they all had, we wouldn't be where we are now. Instead, they have "seen the light" and retracted any truthful thing they ever said about him. How do they sleep at night? Where is Margaret Chase Smith when we need her?
I don't think it is actually Trump that dazzles them (by them I mean everyone from the techbro billionaires to the typical Trump voter). It's the ideology that he represents: for the billionaires it's the prospect of a market unfettered by regulation and taxes to support social programs; for the masses of deplorables, it's the fantasy of white supremacy and sticking it to "the man" and by that, they literally mean everyone who they imagine has taken something away from them by asserting their rights to equality. This nation was not founded on equality, and the ongoing history of racism proves that (which is why critical race theory caused the right to go bonkers). We on the progressive side have failed terribly in (at least) two ways: we imagined that civil rights, once won, would be permanent, and secondly, we failed to appreciate the extent to which a significant number of Americans have been living in a fact-free bubble breathing in the toxic fumes of rage and hatred, which made them easily manipulated. The rise of fascism in the US has been happening right underneath our noses, for decades. Personally, my moment of awakening came with the passage of the Patriot Act, when the vast majority of Americans willingly traded their civil rights for the fantasy of safety and security. I said to my husband, "we are witnessing the birth of a fascist state." Trump is the useful idiot, not the driving force.
I do wish the phrase were 'crucial race theory' rather than 'critical race theory', but then, this was a subject in graduate school level discourse. My Washington State U Renaissance and Reformation history professor, Dr. Ron Schlesinger (nephew of Dr. Arthur Schlesinger) told us in 1974 that we needed to beware of the wave of those peddling fundamentalism. I loved learning about secular humanism. Those who would conflate religion with business, politics and government would do well to recall 'Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's...' Unfortunately, that man will be the next pres. He will be another Reagan - a leader in name only, unable to function at the level required by the job. He only won by 1.5% of the popular vote. It's time to abolish the Electoral College and amend the Constitution in that regard. Vote early, vote regularly!
Yes, very good points. I have been slow to this political awakening and now feel blindsided. I wonder if this period of Trump, as devastating as it will be, will be a wake up call and shake us from our inaction. Or, as in climate disruption, there is a tipping point from which all bets are off.
Agreed! I read an article on Substack reporting that people who see they'll never 'get ahead' or be 'successful' when others (billionaires and well-educated tech workers) are doing well are precisely those with "status anxiety" who support the useful idiot. In part, our system of economics supports two or three classes, particularly when the most wealthy fail to give back and aid the poor, widows, orphans, etc., as part of the social contract. The external focus of consumerism ("buy this and you'll be happy/beautiful, rich and wise") just doesn't do it. Developing a rich internal life, with a sense of agency (can do attitude) helps. Having social (interpersonal and community) support is hugely important. The Patriot Act needs to end. donnie has changed "Ask not what your country can do for you" to "What are you going to give donnie" - a predictable slide into mussolini fascism. trumpf belongs in prison.
Trump is a WEAK person. But, this is how "weak" becomes powerful. Cowardice by some begets strength in others. How shameful for those whom you've noted and for the USA.
I’ve long thought of president-elect Bone Spurs as a bully. For me, some/most/all bullies are cowards: sit them down and tell them, “This is how things are going to be going forward” and they crumple up. I remember the opening scene of the movie “Miss Congeniality” when young Gracie decks the bully on the playground, and I keep that image in mind going forward. And I find some solace knowing that “the billionaires” hold p-e BS in contempt because they can “play” him every time. And he doesn’t realize it…
It is no longer the ‘free press’, they are no longer free to tell the truth or report honestly. I no longer read the newspaper. I barely watch any news, because it’s not really news.
Ever since Disney acquired ABC, ABC programming has suffered. To me there isn’t much to watch on it anymore. I used to switch on Sunday mornings between ABC and NBC to watch the newsmaker programs. ABC used to have venerable news people like Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts. How can anyone watch Stephanopulous anymore and not wonder if he’s either being censored or filtering his own words.
A history of US media kowtowing to the GOP should include Woodward putting important stories— like the Alito’s upside down flag — in a book (published long after the fact) instead of the front page the next day.
Count me in that opposition too, Steven. The betrayal of the truth by much of the mainstream media is appalling. It is clearly up to the people to choose courage and reject their cowardly example. Again, I thank you for your leadership.
Far too many news agencies have been bought by people who are looking for profit and influence, rather than those professionals who kept news separate from entertainment, opinion, comedy and vaudeville. Would that we have more like Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
I wonder what would happen if we relabel all the news companies that have been bought since the time that news was no longer factual. What if we change the term from 'mainstream media' to some other, more accurate label?
On a more concerning note, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, historian, shared on The Contrarian (1/20/25, on Substack) how hegseth now serves as a conduit between the government/military and the hooligans of January 6th, including proud boys, etc. And now he's suggesting we can do away with civilian protections, that he's fine with indiscriminately killing civilians. Our military is not supposed to be policing within the US. I have concerns they are blurring the lines, and concerns they may decide to do some really stupid things, like invade Mexico (again; see late 1890's- first decade of the1900s).
Stephen….After re-reading your article again…something struck me (?). I had the feeling that something seems strange regarding the very unusual amount of extreme sub-servant activity, across a high visibility spectrum of our culture, i.e., a broad band (no pun intended) of the Media, Money, Power, Influence, or Control that’s attending this particular Election?? Nothing similar or of this magnitude comes to mind. Do the Powers that be…know something we mere mortals don’t or, is it my intensifying paranoia?
Re: this and Bob W’s post: It has been decades since I read “The Making of the President 1960”. Is there a relevant lesson to be learned from it? Think I’ll dig out a copy and read it again. A family member’s statement in 1960 that “the Pope will be governing the country!” seems quite quaint! I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, so there is little anyone can tell me about corrupt government.
Stephen, it seems that for centuries, the Republicans have always invoked fear to get their way. Trump is a clever actor as you know where he stands when he opens his big mouth. It is the follow-through that may wake MAGA voters up. Should Stephen Miller get his wish to get rid of “illegal immigrants ”, those voters (and us) will not get foods at the table, nor have housekeepers or someone doing the gardening, building a fence, repairing items, etc. If their money will no longer be guaranteed by the FDIC, how will there be protection? We, who voted for Kamala Harris, did so because we listened to what she had to say. Those voting for trump like to be told what to do and when to do it. They are like dogs on leashes or better yet, Trump is their Pied Piper. Shameful, disgusting, deplorable and sad. Sad that we live amongst the willfully ill-informed.
Bob, Like you I'm always looking for the current running below the surface of the river.
These new kingfish deny global warming. I ask why they would deny something so obvious, mostly they are educated intelligent people... unless they need time to plan how they can survive when all else is crumbling... thus a grab for total power. Radical, yes. Crazy, probably.
I believe it is a total takeover of our Government. Why I say that. Musk is virtually the Co-President and all ready giving orders, he is blackmailing and bullying Congress to confirm trump's sycophant cabinet choices and threatening to jail to trump dissenters. All nominated Cabinet Heads are Stooges, SCOTUS has been highjacked. If he starts deporting people he doesn't want here others will soon follow, i. e., Political enemies! All he needs is the military and our Goose is "Cooked!"
I am reminded of The House That Jack Built. Jack follows Virgil, a person from Dante's Inferno. An architect, he never builds his dream house, instead one built on death & cruelty. He keeps descending down the circles of hell, finally falling into the flames. I see trump & his patsies following the same trajectory.
This is why we're gathering here, seeking truly investigative journalists such as yourself and Judd Legum, to name one other. Even NPR is sanewashing...
Steven…Well Said!!!!! Now we have to learn what we can do…because unless there’s a interceding burst of Lightening…we’re stuck with him, or someone like him, for a potentially long time!
Four years, unless he resigns, or is impeached, convicted, and removed from office, or if he dies of old age while in office. We had an upwelling of candidates, particularly women, running successfully for office about the time newt gingrich began sundering Congress. I would like to see the media and the populace go back to the proper term for a member of the House of Representatives. It's not congressman/woman. It's REPRESENTATIVE.
Cowards, all. “Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.” - Frederick Douglass, 1857.
WOW! Exactly! We need to fight back!
My mail carrier just left. She delivered three mail boxes that had been supposedly delivered days ago.
I was angry!
I need to find compassion and forgiveness in my life,
I am trying to do that.
Let us all try thaa
i can't tell you how many times i received a notice that my package was delivered only to have it arrive days later - and the company (whom I called) had no comment really - let's see what happens in the next few days, they said, and of course it did come - don't tell me it's here when it isn't.

He has NO loyalty except to himself so groveling does not guarantee safety--only a temporary stay. It will be fun to watch Musk get the boot!
Oh yes! It's only a matter of time. Let's share a bucket of popcorn!
Terrific piece…cogent and to the point. Welcome mu world
But are too far beneath MAGA notice to actually receive notice.
If you are replying to my post then I am extremely sad. Women deserve notice and appreciation! Why don't you try imaginin
ing a world without women for a while!
I find the remark insensitive and sarcastic, unworthy of print. Please delete it.
which remark are you referring to?
The remark by David J. Sharp, 'But are too far beneath...'

Exactly what the corporate wealthy and the fascists did when they banded together in the 1880s,1920s and 1930s.
Well said!

Syria gets Democracy. American gets totalitarianism.

Fear is a powerful force. So is the desire to access money and power and not be left out. That said, it’s reasonable to feel paranoia.
