“Better the occasional faults of a government that lives in a spirit of charity than the consistent omissions of a government frozen in the ice of its own indifference.” - FDR

Who will be the next group of people “not wanted”? LGTBQ+ people? Jews? Certain people of color ? People with opposing views or beliefs? Once we go down the road of people not wanted, where will it end?

We’ve already reached that point. Look at who is being ejected without due process from the country. And if you’re poor or Black or brown or LGBTQ or Jewish, or from a “shithole” country— I could go on—it’s arguable that you’ve never been fully wanted here. What was the beautiful, uplifting trajectory of equality and acceptance we’ve seen implemented, however haltingly, however imperfectly, over the decades is now in a deep trouble.

My other thought is this: a country that hates the world cannot possibly lead it.

No kings. AND no clowns! My town is gearing up to show up. "Cheer up," my brother said. "Things could be worse." So I cheered up and sure enough, they got worse.

I thank you for writing this essay, Steven.

American welcoming compassion towards people who are suffering in unstable counties has been offered throughout my lifetime. This sense of normalcy is slipping away once again under Felon 47’s autocratic fascist regime.

It was uplifting to read your call to resistance, and I loved reading Joe Biden’s statement about American inclusive ideals!

Does it even make logical sense that Felon47’s ban does NOT include Egypt, if he is supposedly responding to the immigrant attack in Colorado?

I am wondering if you have any idea why Egypt was not included on the banned country list?

What he said was they “have it under control” which makes no sense. How many of the countries on the list have people who committed terrorist acts here?

IMO, the Dems are probably closer to the real truth. There is always a relation$hip behind these things.

Thank You Steven .. I am ready for the protest. My friend is a wonderful artist and has made three signs for me. I will share them at the rally. I fear that by the time Trump is done we will have the same economy as Russia. His relentless attacks on our livelihood with his tariffs and attacks on every system we have is killing our economy. His effort to destroy Ukraine is heartbreaking . I want to tell all the MAGA voters don't worry by the time he is finsished our only friend will be Russia and few others. They will be happy because no one will want to come here. It is going to be pretty lonely here.

Not only is this the most transparently, gleefully bigoted administration I can remember, but it is unmatched in its ugliness and, yes, sheer stupidity. The damage wrought by these bans to our reputation and national security is incalculable. I’ve just returned from Morocco where I was saddened but not shocked to hear that many of the good hearted, hardworking, talented and intelligent people I met had soured on the idea of traveling to the USA. Our loss.

Realizing that we are ruled by a “minority” is hard to understand. These people want America to be a Pariah? Why? What do they gain?

It is beyond comprehension how so many Republicans can stand up for this bigotry. There silence is their roar of approval. If we are talking tourists why would want to damage that sector? Why these countries? How many tourists came from these places? I’m guessing not many and this may be trying to look strong while really doing nothing. Everyday there’s got to be something new, but most of the Presidents speaking is pure shit.

There were multiple huge protests today in LA after ICE and whatever other agencies conducted large military style raids going to places where there might be people without legal status. Jacob Soboroff was there & reported they used ‘bearcat type’ armored vehicles and flash bangs during the raids. That something they’ve begun doing to frighten people - especially onlookers.

David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union was arrested for obstruction. Others described it as observing. Regardless, he was injured, treated at the hospital & is in federal custody.

This comes after Stephen Miller reportedly had a tantrum about the low arrest / deportation numbers quotas. Some reports say he threatened to start firing management of the bottom 10% arrest rates. https://www.axios.com/2025/05/28/immigration-ice-deportations-stephen-miller

These ramp up as a show of ‘strength’ as the big ugly budget bill is making waves; Abrego Garcia was returned to TX to face federal charges; a Guatemalan man was returned for ‘due process’ and the attempt to deport 8 criminals to South Sudan has turned into a sordid, sick (literally) mess.

We're going to miss those immigrants we used to welcome, and sooner than one might suspect.

Japan, a nation that has difficulties attracting immigrants is in the midst of severe population decline.

This creates problems: "The continued decline in births is renewing concern over the future of Japan’s social security system. The nation’s public pension program is under increasing strain, with fewer contributors and a growing number of recipients."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-04/japan-s-fertility-rate-hits-record-low-despite-government-push

Immigrants pay into our Social Security system but unless thee become citizens don't collect. Legal immigrants tend to be younger and have more children. All to the good for the US because, (from the above article) "US births declined in 2023 to the lowest level in more than 40 years."

IOW if Trump succeeds in closing the door to immigration he is putting our Social Security system under increasing pressure.

It's not just the immorality of Trump's anti-immigrant bent that is a concern, it's the economics of it.

BTW, this may be a factor in recent increases in long term interest rates. Populations in all but Africa are in decline. How many people will be alive in a nation when today's 30 year bonds expire?
