Add Vought. And McMahon. And Bondi, and a bunch of under-recognized bureaucrats down the line. They’re all tools of a terrifying mix of autocracy and idiocracy. We’re in the even more frightening position of having to depend on Senate Republicans to display an enormous amount of political courage. In other words, we’re screwed.
You are confusing your Kennedys, you are describing the congressman, Joseph Kennedy. RFK is a former heroin addict, conspiracy-theory-believing anti-vax lunatic, whose actions belie all the decades of public service done by his relatives. The living ones have disavowed his evil deeds.
I'm quite aware. I was 9 when JFK was elected; too young to vote for Bobby, probably voted for Ted. That this guy has his father's name is painful. I'm with the family.

Not a wimp. And the very phrasing of the question bothers me. It's like splitting us all up, when the real issue is that Trump is throwing us unqualified and unsuitable candidates all the way down the line. By asking us to pick the one worst, we divide up when what we need to do is push back against the thing itself: a process that Trump is using to disorient us and distract us away from whatever he's go going on that he doesn't want us to take too close a look at. Steve, I think you asked the wrong question on this issue.
The question was intended to encourage reflection and sharing what readers are thinking about. It’s not a competition to see who wins—dividing us. Clearly the choices are consistently awful.
Given that it’s the existential crisis of our time, of course Trump had to pick fellow climate denialists Lee Zeldin and Chris Wright as EPA Administrator and Secretary of Energy, respectively. Zeldin in a 2014 interview said he doubts the severity of the crisis; Wright in a 2023 LinkedIn video has flat out denied it

Trump is filling the government with loons, traitors, slackers, fools, blunderers and corrupt plutocrats. Most or Trump's nominees lack the competence, ethics, background, and character to be effective cabinet leaders.
Proud to be a liberal woman, more than ever! Proud to wear this totally unhinged radical liberal t-shirt in front of Republicans 👇
However, and this is important: if the goal is to destroy and dismantle then tRump, Federalist Society, and others are indeed placing perfect nominations! To create chaos and ineptitude is to establish oligarchy and despotic institutions
I won’t give up on our beautiful country that I love so much, but I have concerns about how our economy will be after orange man takes his oath of office which I don’t feel he will be sincere about. I know about the tariffs he wants to impose on countries like China and I’m seriously considering buying a new phone before he takes office so I won’t have to pay $2,000 for a $900 phone.
After reading the Substack & your not giving up on the country, Rita, I wondered how one denies citizenship; if the only way is to move. I’ve begun doing what people in dictatorships have known: no more talking with strangers. I’ll be more careful in what I post publicly bc I think all those who voted for this will be charged with reporting us. The sheriff in the county where Springfield, Ohio, is, said he’d do nothing to protect those who supported Harris/Walz; that he knew where they lived.
Today, visiting family at a hospital, every single nurse and those cleaning and otherwise working were, I’m guessing by accents, from either a US territory or another country than the US. On the way to and from the hospital, we talked of the implications for not us. If I feared deportation, even if a recipient of TPS, DACA status, a green card holder or citizen like in WWII and Japanese American internment, I’d be terrified of all - I am because the voters did this. (Yes I think with help.)
Maybe. A native Ohioan (Montgomery Country), I’ve been gone a long time. I thought it was the area for Springfield. Portage is north, near the Lake? I am glad to be corrected. Thanks.
All of course. But for me, the combo of RFK Jr and Dr Oz basically controlling Health care, Public Health and Medicare/Medicaid, Federal funding and the ACA, rural hospitals, women’s health care and health research - which under Biden was about to get a needed boost of time and financial resources to get even a small portion of the research needed to improve women’s health care from Pregnancy, Childbirth, Infancy through peri and menopause all the way to end of life. All the inequities for people of color and communities both rural and poor (many filled with Trump voters, ironically) will suffer the most. As always.
I’m also concerned for the ongoing COVID epidemic and a new pandemic that we in public health have been predicting for years now … even as COVID was beginning. And we have now turned public health into a political football and will be, IF POSSIBLE, even LESS able to handle an additional crisis.
But of course.
All of it is beyond horrendous.
It’s like voting whether I want Americans to be slaughtered by a firing squad of ten or 20 people.? The carnage will be the equally damning.
Such a sad thing. It's gut turning to think about. I'm a recent cancer patient that gets my healthcare from the VA. They are planning to gut the VA. I may have been close to death last year, but I'm in remission now, dealing with the knock on effects of chemo and radiation. I do fear for myself if my cancer goes back or at least dealing with all the health issues I now have but I fear what will happen to all of my fellow vets I see in my many trips to the VA facilities I go to for care. Once these people lose VA healthcare, they will die horrible deaths within weeks, days or even hours after their health care has finally ceased. It will a a form of genocide. My death will come not all that far in the future without the VA. Mine will be a slow, lingering death. I can't believe that so many of my fellow vets voted for the Orange Buffoon. They have signed their own death warrants.
A local “pro-life” physician has been chosen to lead CDC. Weldon was a US Congressman years ago and was known for his role in the Terri Schiavo controversy where he tried to use his MD credentials to dispute her diagnosis after she suffered brain death. Weldon has had several failed bids to return to politics, most recently as Fl Rep where he lost in the primary this year to a Trump-endorsed candidate.Weldon was endorsed by a Freedom Caucus Rep and our “constitutional” sheriff.
Yes, Dr Tool, all you wrote. I fear “my fellow Americans” who voted for lies, believing they would get .. what? Cheaper eggs? Not if bird flu flourishes with ignoramuses in charge. As we watch “Leonardo” on PBS, I fear the lack of curiosity, investigation, any ability to question.
What does happen when the economy collapses from deportations & tariffs? When pandemics of preventable diseases overwhelm any still existing hospitals and the staffs are lessened even more? What will become of us?
Our national security is the most important so I would say Tulsi Gabbard above the others with the exception of Kash Patel “if” he is picked for FBI director.
Every one of them is alarming at best, disastrous at worst. Sadly, I live in Florida, Matt Gaetz's district. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio are my senators. Not much help there. Reaching out to moderate Republicans to vote with the Dems is my best hope. I get physically ill when I see or hear the orange one.
I don’t watch any news media anymore (local or national) I will not look at his disgusting face. I have become a hermit because I live in Texas with fu*king morons all around me including relatives 🤬
I live in KY among many angry reflexive people including a wayward son. However, there are also people doing good work and working with them we are able to break through here and there. I hope you are able to find some likeminded souls or as we used to say “a small circle of friends.”
I live elsewhere and have no voting representation, Debi. It’s what Steven asked: will anyone of the so-called GOP [Graham today threatened sanctions on our friends if they concurred with the ICC about Israel!] remember their oath? If they don’t live their oath what possible consequences then will there be? DoJ will not do a thing. SCOTUS? All those “originalists” loyal to what? I’d dream of a David Souter-like surprise turn and can’t imagine the very embittered justices having any willingness to act.
I notice that Musk is outside the government and has Ramaswamy and Marjorie to contend with after trump ‘joked’ about not being able to get him out of Mar A Lago.
And he’s on a losing streak. His pick for Treasurer (Lutnick) who he publicly pressured trump to choose lost out to rival Bessent. He had trump as a guest to show off a Space X launch & landing. It did a quick splash down instead of returning to the launch pad.
What, Susan, does the resistance there expect to do? I ask seriously. That too today was part of the conversation with family. I know what those in WWII did and physically I can’t. Do we put taxes in escrow accounts? Shelter those who may be deported? Pee in a different restroom? (We have trans family who served as a Congressional Page while transitioning. Where now would they pee if someone is checking at the door?) Will little happen until one of the MAGA folks faces a hardship?
Sadly, I believe you’re right, they won’t change until it affects them personally, however, it will affect them sooner or later. Stand firm in your support and protection of your trans relative. It’s hard to see right now, because folks are still reeling, but there is great opposition and they are already at work. Not to say it’s going to be quick, but you are not alone. Start building a local tribe. You’ll find support.
Maybe Scott and Rubio won't grow spines, but send them messages anyway. Let them know that at least one of their constituents wants them to do the right thing!!
I live in Florida too. Lord Voldemort and Little Marco are less than worthless. The same for my Congressional Representative, Daniel Webster. I guess we can be thankful that Laura Loomer who ran against Webster in 2022, did not win their primary and she got elected.
Addendum: Matt Gaetz is gone! Never more to darken our doorway. Perhaps, even, on his way to prison , if this DOJ can get their s**t together. Even the 🍊💩 doesn't like him...
Tulsi looks the worst & has been proven to not be trusted.. it appears some r's are growing a spine so possibly they will keep rfk in check... hopeful thinking
I hope so, too! Hegseth scares he bejeezus out of me; it’s a tossup as to which of them will do more damage to our country. Republican SPINE is definitely called for.
Yet, I'm encouraging family and friends in states with MAGA Senators to still write and remind them of their oath to the Constitution, not to a grifter who hates. Thune is a bit, I fear, like Speaker Johnson: they have a "central casting look" of decent human beings and are far from it.
What I understand is the fear by MAGA supporters of physical attack on them and their families and staffs by the same people who attacked on Jan. 6, recently marched in Columbus, OH, before marched and killed in Charlottesville. It is a real fear.
There will be no one to hold all of those accountable for breaking laws, not abiding by their oaths, etc. In my late 70s, I marvel that I am even writing these words. My wonderful h.s. civics teacher, still alive, did not help us learn this order about the United States. I am unsure how to live from now on except in fear of talking with strangers.
There isn’t a good one in the lot butt if I had to pick the most dangerous it’s a toss up between Tulsi Gabbard and RFK jr. Gabbard because of her affiliations and her ability to sound rational, unlike RFK Jr. RFK Jr because we’ve seen an uptick in bird flu in humans, including the case in Canada where last I heard there wasn’t an obvious animal connection, unlike the poultry industry workers in Oregon who have come down with it.
At least something good came out of all of tRUMP's idiocy; Gaetz will not be Attorney General AND he resigned (in disgrace) his seat in Congress. An early holiday gift for us! Don't turn over any rocks or say his name 3 times or he'll be back.
Top of the list for me is Gabbard. A close 2nd is the rest of your list, plus others mentioned here in this comments section. Stephen Miller as Deputy Chief of Staff, though not a Cabinet position, is to me the most evil Trump choice.
If you’re asking me which of Trump’s hired democracy killers do I worry will be most successful, I’m stuck for an answer. But the stench of Trump’s Musk, an odor Putin is also wearing, may prove to be the most stifling!
While sex predators should not be anywhere near the White House, I would say the National Security concerns of Tulsi Gabbord are the most horrible. She is so bad the TSA put her on the no fly list. She is a major Security risk.
We have her word that she was on a watch list based on her claim that she was pulled aside ‘randomly’ not so randomly multiple times. She says she “pieced it together.” She got a lot of attention for her claim that it was political. Then some ‘whistleblower’ spread it. So my main question is how does that square with her being Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves? Cuz if its true she was flagged, there’s a bigger problem.
I can attest to after not flying for a few yrs, I flew for a job related conference. I was ‘randomly’ pulled aside, wanded, my luggage was getting similar treatment. (They left a note in it.) I have a plate due to a broken ankle 30+ yrs prior. While barefoot, it was wanded it too. 🥹
What I “pieced together” after the 2nd random search before the return flight - because no one is supposed to tell you … An airline staffer said offhandedly “Oh, you booked 2 one-way tickets”. Our business office only looked at the $$$. It didn’t care about my convenience (weird hours of arrival & departure) or even know about “security red flags” for one-way tickets.
Hegseth hasn't washed his hands in ten years, because he doesn't "believe" in germs, and has white supremist tattoos connected with the crusades which he wants to reenact with anyone left of Hitler, I mean trumpenfurrer and was pulled from Biden's national guard detail by his boss as being 'suspect'.
Does Biden/Harris have the ability to initiate the FBI background checks? If so they better get going on checking these nominees. And yes I have contacted my Senators to urge them to fulfill their Constitutional obligation. The only thing that offers me any consolation is that even if most - or all - of these clowns are confirmed, they are so incompetent that they won't be able to accomplish much of what they want to do. None of them have the administrative skills to even run the local Dairy Queen . But there will be a lot of chaos and destruction in any case
Sorry to be a wimp. All of them alarm me.
Fair enough.

Kennedy is in a class by himself for me, a MA liberal Democrat who honors what the Kennedy family has done politically and socially.
Don't you mean, "dis-honors"?
I didn't realize Substack was a place to foment ugly retort rather than actual constructive discussion.

Tulsi Gabbard is highest risk for the safety of the country from outside threats but none of them are better than a D grade.
I think Miller and Homan are a pretty terrifying duo. Their plans will hurt and displace thousands of people.
The other picks are just as scary. No one will be in charge of the insane asylum.
Each and every one of them
There isn’t a qualified pick among them. Maybe Biondi but she’s compromised. All of them are.
