I did not need this debate to tell me that Biden is the best candidate. His record stands on its own.

I don’t think anyone’s mind was changed by last evening’s performance. What did change last night was confidence in journalistic integrity The so-called moderators did nothing to clarify truth or even make critical adjustments. They distorted Trump’s status by calling him “President Trump.” Trump’s firehouse of lies, denying events the entire country saw with their own eyes as an example, were left unchallenged. Biden’s people agreeing to a format with no simultaneous fact checking was a mistake. What’s interesting is that the “ordinary voters” interviewed by talking heads at cable tv channels said that Trump did nothing but spew lies. Irony, I guess, that fact checking made no difference in people knowing Trump is a liar.

I couldn’t keep watching after the first half hour when it was obvious President Biden was not having the kind of night he needed - and his supporters wanted - him to have. It was a huge disappointment, but nothing would EVER convince me that Mr. Trump is an effective leader - or even close to the leader President Biden is. I wish the President would have ignored Mr. Trump and just answered each question as if he were not on stage with a reprehensible cad.

I did the same, and I agree with you. I wouldn't vote for Trump no matter what. I would vote for any Democratic candidate if only to keep Trump out of office, because Trump in a second reign will destroy America. He's our worst enemy in all of history.

i'm a physician and see this from a medical point of view . I don't think that Biden's performance was old man. I think it was nervous, stuttering, and stupid preparation swirling around in his head .

None of my old male patients or very old men speak like that or think like that - including those with dementia or parkinson's

he was loud and comfortable afterwards at the party

Also a head cold, but whatever. The other option is open neo-facist stupidity, criminality, corruption and chaos, attacks on the rule of law, etc. etc.

And was fine at midnight at a Waffle House talking to people.

Joe had my vote in 2020 and will have it again in 2024.

Trump was as horrible as I believed he would be loudly and rapidly spewing lie after lie so many so fast it is impossible to address them. It is Trump and the Repubs chosen disgusting ingrained

“ modus operandi.”..<<

The hoarse voice due to a mild cold did NOT change my mind: I’m voting for Biden.

Let’s see … vote for a wannabe dictator or the guy who was over-scheduled & had a cold.

Doesn’t see like a tough choice.

I’m still wondering what the role of the moderators was. I had to turn it off. Fact checking after the fact is ridiculous. CNN was the third party in this awful debate.

Expand full comment

I’m not certain that was agreed to in advance. I read that the Biden campaign was unhappy when CNN said it was Biden’s job to factcheck in real time. Just to make matters worse the factchecking afterward missed a lot. Ex: Nancy Pelosi did not and is not on video taking responsibility for the mess on January 6th! 😠

That was one of the most egregious lies I’ve ever heard! I didn’t know that CNN said it was Biden’s job to fact check in real time. No one can do that while they’re debating What is the point of having Daniel Dale fact check afterwards? They have enough money and technical expertise to run the fact checks as a chyron. It was so disheartening. I turned it off at one point, and left it off.

100% why TFG uses Gish Galloping technique in debates, to throw so much BS out there that it is impossible to address much, if any, of it.

Most certainly not a 'State of Union' moment. Loud Mouth Fat Guy came loaded w lies, the President came w a cold & barely able to speak. Was hard to watch but sat through it all - how could LMFG begin to claim he did not say 'fine people on both sides' when we heard it live. Just one of his string of untruths; a loud-mouthed, unscruppled prevaricator, Hitler wanna-be & NOT my president ever.

Biden remains my choice because I know he believes in working for America, her people, her Constitution and people's rights.

Don't forget - Obama also had a truly disastrous 1st debate.

HRC won her debate.

Yea, but Obama was 51 in 2012 and age was not a factor being used against him.

Steven…this is not a Trump vs Biden decision…this is democracy vs autocracy…and we need the strongest person we can find to combat Trump, word for word. Biden and Trump have completely different personas (thank God), but we need someone who, with Biden’s full support, can carry the ball forward and leave Trump in the dustbin of history, once and for all. It will take all of us, including Biden, to see this situation for what it is and to support our democracy going forward. I hope the Biden campaign can see this for what it is, and either steady this ship as it sails toward its destination, or step aside and allow someone else to carry the torch. That’s just the plain fact of it. This is not a normal election cycle. I pray we can prevail, because if we don’t, we lose all that we hold dear. Our democracy dies and with it, truth, humanity, compassion, and respect for the rule of law goes with it.

The perfect candidate to replace Biden is Tim Kaine. Think about it.

Replacing Biden would had the convicted felon the presidency.

He wasn't the perfect VP, so of course it stands to reason he should be handed the candidacy? To be clear, not a single person here will have any say in whether or not Biden steps aside, and if so, who will replace him. Think about it. 😉

I just watched CNN go on for 90 seconds of fact checking Trumps lies last night, 47 lies told in total.

Think about that for a minute…it was 90 minutes, 2 minutes for a question, 1 minute rebuttals and maybe a follow-up..that means every time Trump had the mic, he lied, every single time!

Then the moronic MSNBC panel said, Joe should have rebutted his lies? Really WTF?

If Joe tried to rebut the fucking criminal all night he wouldn’t have momentum to get his policy answers out..which is what happens when you fucking have the actual Devil standing next to you!

Joe was frustrated, angry and yes not on message when he needed to be…

But I stand with Joe, how he turned around our standing with our Allies, with Ukraine, With going after Trump on Roe v Wade and abortion care, ACA, Childcare relief, Giving Black Universities and Black students help and lessening student loans, jobs creation and a booming economy!

It may have been a stumble here and there, but he is the answer to prevent Trump’s decimation of Democracy and our Freedoms as we know it today!

So the choice is between a president who will have the political nous to delegate authority to his top staff and appointed department heads, and a neo-fascist criminal nitwit?*

The was the choice BEFORE this poor debate performance, a debate which lacked any fact-checking of note from the moderators as well.

C'est la vie and it's on to Paris!

* A neo-fascist with numerous pending monumental felony cases against him, including little foibles like trying to stage a seditious, violent coup and stealing top secret classified documents, hiding them, and lying about it - also conspiring to manipulate "fake electors" to have the 2020 presidential election illegally annulled.

Using some mumbling and confusion (likely affected by a nasty cold, but whatever) as an excuse to vote for Trump is a pathetic attempt to rationalize a preference for authoritarianism and attacks on the rule of law and democracy itself.

I agree with the assessment of the President's performance, however I am sorry to see him malign the morals of that alley cat. I'm stickin with Joe!

Thank you for your last paragraph. It gives me hope after last night! I know President Joe is old, but tRUMP is such a disgusting disrespectful disgrace. It is beyond my comprehension that this is even a close race. Total liar, cheater, despicable cringe worthy “human” being…how did we get here?

The last, best hope for Democrats in this year's presidential campaign is a woman at the top of the ticket. I opt for Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She should choose Hakeem Jeffries as here VP candidate. Democrats need to expand their horizons.

Right or wrong, none of us has a say in this. Primaries are over I believe, as of June 4th. The decision to step aside or not is Biden's and if so, we the people don't get to opt for a replacement. That said, I like both of the people you suggest, it's just not ours to select. I also read elsewhere that the campaign finance laws require Harris to be on the ticket or it's not transferrable. That was commented by several readers on Steve Schmidt's The Warning substack. but I have yet to try to confirm this.

A shocking public performance from the most decent guy and also the defender of Democracy and one wonders why all those who love him let him get into this situation. In an ideal world, he should be allowed to retire. However, the choice between the 2 remains the same the Democrats should be much stronger and much more visible in their support for him. I am sorry but past performance is not seen as a guarantee for the future. For instance, where is the 2024-2025 plan to safeguard democracy to defend it against the attack from 2025 MAGA plan for a single-party autocracy so fiercely propagated by GOP? Stop whining about Trump's lies and hit him and the world harder with the truth and be loud and consistent with it. (so sad to see Biden fail to respond to some of the lies as he did not appear to have the true facts readily available). One thing about Trump, he keeps repeating the same lies so we should know them by now and have strong factual responses available to hammer him with every time he repeats his lies. The media won't do this and it is up to the politicians to confront Trump publically. The best opportunity for this was lost but there still is time to get it right

Unlike Trump, Biden did not use his time for wasted rebuttalls. He actually answered the questions. And his facial expressions were priceless. Trump gets all the media, but Biden quietly provided rhe "steak" of the matter.

My dad used to say you can’t catch a liar because they will just tell another lie.

The American public is not interested in details. The Dems need brief compare & contrast talking points addressing issues people care about. Then point to a website with the numbers, details and minutia.

Yes. Many folks like QR codes; they are quick too. The Dems could have their own page/s.

I suffered from debate hangover. No props allowed in the debate. I was also thinking of how the Dems get their message out. Not messages curated by others that may not be designed for short attention spans.

Biden’s record should stand testament to his many, many accomplishments as our President. The drug addled convicted felon spewed lie after lie and it was nauseating to watch. I had to mute him when he spoke it was so riddled with lies. I believe actions speak louder than words and I can’t think of a single thing Cheeto accomplished that helped us as a nation. America was a laughing stock and he was chief clown during his pseudo presidency. I am all in for President Biden. Let’s hope the media does not show its weaknesses by touting Cheeto.
