What you may be underestimating is the role of economic power -- Big Money, corporations, billionaires, etc. -- in all this. Consider the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United (2010), basically saying that corporations are people too. That was a 5–4 decision, and it came down six years before Trump was elected the first time, and before Trump (with a huge assist from Mitch McConnell) added Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett to the Court.
Economic power isn't one of the three branches of government, so it works hard to control them. At the moment it has a trifecta, but it's not working out well because Trump is a frail vessel and the congressional Republicans are as hapless a crew as any ever elected to public office. Far-right ideologues never had the votes to elect anyone to anything, so for decades they've harnessed the power of white racism, fear of "modernity," and whatever else they could. Even that is starting to fall away.
How do we get out of this mess? Good question, but I wouldn't dismiss "centralization of power" as one of the tools at hand. The FDR administration's centralizing of power got us out of the Depression -- and economic power *hated it* every step of the way. They got their own back with Reagan, and whaddya know, they've crashed the economy again and taken a sledgehammer to democratic institutions.
How are we going to bring attention to all of this when almost half the country is not getting the facts or believes that this is not true or, worse still, thinks that it would be ‘fun’ to have a dictator. Why be bothered by all those pesky decisions of war and peace when you can have someone at the helm who can make them with or without your consent? It would make Congress’ job SO much easier if it didn’t have to fret over details like laws and statutes and confirmations. The Supreme Court just needs a nod from the White House to make up stuff that sounds like decisions based on the Constitution, but really isn’t. Bend the law, just this once and call yourself an “Originalist’. Let Trump and Steven Miller, the shadow president, decide whether or not to hold elections and if so, who can vote and how. Recently, at a long social gathering politics eventually was discussed and zi gently just asked if anyone knew what the Heritage Foundation is and is doing.
My little group of educated working professionals knew nothing. It was a party. Perhaps I was remiss in not delineating the disastrous dismantling underway. I do write about it.
I’m uncertain of the most effective way of thwarting the Heritage Foundation’s progress - unless we can unmask who funds them, but of course more crucial is taking back our country - in as you remind us, in 126 days.
The question that comes to me is whether winning in the midterms will be effective. We’ve just seen Trump refuse to sign the housing bill. There would have to be a veto proof majority in both houses to begin to undo the mess of the last almost two years. And there would need to be a plan on the part of the Democrats to dismantle the worst of the mess. I have not seen evidence of either so far.
I’ve been thinking quite a bit about platform, about the way our democracy should work. We have a lot of creative rebuilding to do and we should have a broad vision of what that might look like. But we also must have a shorter term strategy for the next two years, and for the four years after that.
Democracy will not win by opposing Trump, but by standing firm for the policies and principles that most people believe in. A government that provides for the things people cannot do for themselves: health care, education, transportation systems, equitable access to resources, the ability to apply themselves to good work and support themselves and their families, access to safe adequate housing… from a solid base, individuals and communities can create the next levels of the good life: music, arts, community relationships, mutual support organizations, etc.
Since the abrogation of the “settled law” fallacy, when this regime is gone, and/or when the Democrats re-take control of Congress, legislation should be crafted and passed quickly to undo the damage of the Roberts court. And since there will be no McConnell veto in the Senate, let the impeachment and trial come about.
Dems would have to hold their 13 Senate seats up for election; take the 20 GOP seats up for election & win the 2 GOP special elections (that will occur to elect Senators to Vance & Rubio’s old seats). That would add up to the 67 seats needed to convict. Otherwise, Dems would once again need GOP votes.
As appalled as I was by the Court’s decision at the time, I must confess that I didn’t foresee how bad it was going to get. I honestly thought that Kamala Harris was going to win. (And, incidentally, I believe that except for Musk’s interference, she did.)
Steven, I wouldn’t be too harsh on myself, if I were you. There has been a whole lot of effort, time, and money expended, by some very smart people to introduce Project 2025 and Christian Nationalism to his country. I would call it a soft coup by executive order, and the elimination of independent institutions. When we vote, we all have an opportunity of a Plebiscite. A decree of the people, to emphasize a sweeping show of our national will that this regime will change be annexed. What comes next is the righting of laws in our nations history and to show the world that as Americans we recall our history. That no one is above the law and this country will never have a King or his loyal court of players….
My greatest fear right now is that, despite polls and history, the Democrats won’t take control of of either house which, in this scenario of repressive voting rules and gerrymandering, IS a possibility. SCOTUS will continue with unhinged rulings and Congress will abdicate their constitutional duties. Power to oppose this happening must directly come from We the People. How that would play out is way above my pay grade but I would love to hear how you and your readers would respond if that event were to occur.
We need an uprising like Albania is doing. More people on the streets. More outraged citizens that this is happening to our country

As frightening and painful as it is to read about this, again, Steven, I am deeply deeply grateful you again succinctly and thoroughly addressed the “brazen” actions perpetrated by the villainous collection of anti Democracy and - yes racially biased Heritage Foundation - funded also by many unknown entities - in fact - perhaps also by foreign interests bent on forever altering our systems to benefit only their existence and their selfish philosophies.
I’ve been looking: The numbers of systems altered already are staggering.

It was your article then (2023) that introduced me to the Heritage Foundation. And I’ve since spent time learning more and more about it - soulfully and intellectually stunned it is not a constant topic in the news or from on our officials.
I too am horrified the legacy media is basically mute when in fact as you say this should be consistent topic of warning.
Recently, at a long social gathering politics eventually was discussed and zi gently just asked if anyone knew what the Heritage Foundation is and is doing.
My little group of educated working professionals knew nothing. It was a party. Perhaps I was remiss in not delineating the disastrous dismantling underway. I do write about it.
I’m uncertain of the most effective way of thwarting the Heritage Foundation’s progress - unless we can unmask who funds them, but of course more crucial is taking back our country - in as you remind us, in 126 days.

The question that comes to me is whether winning in the midterms will be effective. We’ve just seen Trump refuse to sign the housing bill. There would have to be a veto proof majority in both houses to begin to undo the mess of the last almost two years. And there would need to be a plan on the part of the Democrats to dismantle the worst of the mess. I have not seen evidence of either so far.
I’ve been thinking quite a bit about platform, about the way our democracy should work. We have a lot of creative rebuilding to do and we should have a broad vision of what that might look like. But we also must have a shorter term strategy for the next two years, and for the four years after that.
Democracy will not win by opposing Trump, but by standing firm for the policies and principles that most people believe in. A government that provides for the things people cannot do for themselves: health care, education, transportation systems, equitable access to resources, the ability to apply themselves to good work and support themselves and their families, access to safe adequate housing… from a solid base, individuals and communities can create the next levels of the good life: music, arts, community relationships, mutual support organizations, etc.
Since the abrogation of the “settled law” fallacy, when this regime is gone, and/or when the Democrats re-take control of Congress, legislation should be crafted and passed quickly to undo the damage of the Roberts court. And since there will be no McConnell veto in the Senate, let the impeachment and trial come about.
Dems would have to hold their 13 Senate seats up for election; take the 20 GOP seats up for election & win the 2 GOP special elections (that will occur to elect Senators to Vance & Rubio’s old seats). That would add up to the 67 seats needed to convict. Otherwise, Dems would once again need GOP votes.
Have you considered that the elections will be targeted if in fact there will even be elections.
There will be elections. They are run by the states. But we can expect interference.
As appalled as I was by the Court’s decision at the time, I must confess that I didn’t foresee how bad it was going to get. I honestly thought that Kamala Harris was going to win. (And, incidentally, I believe that except for Musk’s interference, she did.)
Steven, I wouldn’t be too harsh on myself, if I were you. There has been a whole lot of effort, time, and money expended, by some very smart people to introduce Project 2025 and Christian Nationalism to his country. I would call it a soft coup by executive order, and the elimination of independent institutions. There are roughly 71 advanced democratic societies in the world, and only one—the United States—is entirely controlled by a rigid two-party system. Let’s get Dems elected and then hold their feet to the fire to make the necessary changes, preventing this from happening again.

Thank you for reminding us of how we got here. It has been a terrible 20 months. I hope that our midterms can stop the madness, with a change in the house and senate. Until he is out of office he and his cronies Russell Volt will continue to try and take over the country. The fear of a revolution will stop many from participating, this happened in 1775 with the loyalists. We must stay strong and first vote and ask everyone you know to vote.
I never imagined that this cold happen, and I would be witnessing it happening. My love for history has shown me that humans have through out all of time have destroyed their countries over and over.
