As I've written elswhere, IMO the non-corrupt members of the press ought to have either cancelled or scheduled and then publically and dramatically boycotted this event, making it plain who the fascism-collaborator members of the press are.
The fact that so many msm journalists showed up to this dinner tells us everything we need to know about them. They are still trying to curry favor with Trump and they cannot be trusted to impartially and thoroughly report on the administration.
so you know that we've been brainwashed not to sue![ Chicago Sun cocked her head]
I can Google the word fake news and get 10,000,000 50,000,000 100,000,000 hits... I Google the word fraud news ...
Chicago Sun: "What is your question?"
The question is:
If every court case where fox news damaged constituents by having them vote against their interest... and that damage was taken Out Of fox news' hide... how long... I think fox news would be toast in about 1 year... what's your estimate? (They would have never made it to causing the Iraq War?)
[New York times senior senior Journalist chuckles and then his not so senior neighbor grins]
WaPo: I think with the ... what is... I can't ... I'm not a lawyer ... I stumbled out of possibly being a lawyer in college and took an intro to law class and thank god I hated it... but what's interesting about the media that's happening ... some of it is happening with the NRA... sometimes there's a boycott of Fox... but the Corporate world and their reaction to Parkland... I think you can see ... you know ... Sean Hannity has had companies pull their advertising from the show
That done in a certain way will be more quickly effective than ever trying to go through court and if you can get corporations to pull their advertising you know that is a big plus
The MSM should have a dinner honoring achievements of their best reporters but no longer have the WH Correspondents dinner. It has morphed into a red carpe style event, a moment to get dressed up and be seen and even invite real celebrities! It once worked when we had presidents who knew how to deliver their own clever repartee but more importantly could handle being roasted in return. Our current president just brings venom. Abolish the WHCD!
Nope. It's dead to me until corporations no longer can own media. Corporate media has sabotaged democracy and there will be no more in my life. Period.
Can't wait until Citizen's United is overturned, corporations are busted up, and tax rates hit 50-70%. A reckoning is coming.
No, legacy media is exactly that - the old media before we discovered the dangers inherent in access ‘journalism’, news-tainment, and the conflict of interest from corporate ownership. The good news is that there’s ample opportunity for hard-nosed, resourceful, well-funded, and selfless journalists to create a new media sweeping aside the old dowagers.
We all help by seeking out and sharing credible sources and different perspectives and supporting them financially, where possible.
This short answer to your question is “ NO!”The long answer is that I was HORRIFIED when I saw a clip this morning from the White House Correspondent Dinner where Felon47 was making “joking hand gestures” when the award was presented to the New York Times reporter who published a pubescent female outline created by occupant of the White House for Jeffery Epstein’s 50th Birthday. The enigmatic written text inside the drawing read like an admission that Epstein and Trump’s friendship was a brotherhood of cruel sexual trafficking and rape of young girls! 😱 The public is STILL waiting for these predators to be identified!
If this can be “sanitized” by the press at an awards dinner, then main stream journalism is clearly beyond redemption !
* Correction: The award was actually won by a group of journalists at The Washington Post.
Those who have sacrificed their souls will be forgotten, their reputations soured, their thoughts, nullified. If history has taught us anything, it is to know that one’s character stands the test of time. Sadly, these people dug through the bargain bin for a worthless treasure. We need nothing more than to know their names. Their works will be chastised as easily as their character. They are the discount media, the ambulance chasers of class, hollowed out and removed from critical journalism.
No because the fourth estate is actually a fifth column which is designed to loot and plunder not investigate and educate. Here is how:
Ten Ways the .1% - Who Own Almost All Media and Which Have Radicalized Us Against One Another - Are Manipulating Us Right Now to Walk in Lockstep Into the Technocratic Incinerator, by Unknown
1) The first manipulation is the illusion of choice. You think you have two parties representing different visions for America but both parties are funded by the same billionaires, vote for the same surveillance bills, approve the same defense budgets, and serve the same corporate interests. The choice you are given is which color tie the puppet wears, not who controls the strings.
2) The second manipulation is emotional hijacking. The news does not inform you, it activates you. Every story is framed to trigger fear or anger or disgust because those emotions bypass your rational thinking and make you easier to control. You are not watching journalism. You are being subjected to psychological operations designed to keep you in a constant state of agitation.
3) The third manipulation is tribal sorting. The algorithm learns what makes you angry and feeds you more of it until your entire worldview is shaped by outrage at the other side. You are sorted into a tribe not because you chose it but because keeping you tribal keeps you predictable and profitable.
4) The fourth manipulation is false scarcity. You are told resources are limited and the other tribe is taking what belongs to you. Immigrants are stealing your jobs. Welfare recipients are draining your taxes. The other party is destroying your healthcare. Meanwhile the billionaire class has more wealth than any humans in history and could solve most of these problems tomorrow if they wanted to.
5) The fifth manipulation is memory holing. Stories that threaten powerful interests get buried or forgotten within days. Exposed crimes result in no consequences. Historical context that would help you understand the present is never taught. You are kept in a perpetual present with no past to learn from and no future to plan for.
6) The sixth manipulation is controlled opposition. The voices you think are fighting for you are often funded by the same interests they pretend to oppose. The outrage merchant on your side of the aisle is playing a character designed to keep you engaged and angry and tuned in while nothing ever actually changes.
7) The seventh manipulation is the Overton window. The range of acceptable opinion is artificially narrowed so that anything outside it seems extreme. Ideas that were mainstream fifty years ago are now treated as radical. Ideas that serve elite interests are treated as moderate common sense. You are not choosing your beliefs from the full range of human thought. You are choosing from a menu they wrote.
8) The eighth manipulation is learned helplessness. You are shown so many problems with no solutions that you eventually give up and accept that nothing can change. This is intentional. A population that believes resistance is futile does not resist. They scroll and complain and feel superior for understanding how bad things are while doing absolutely nothing about it.
9) The ninth manipulation is identity capture. Your political affiliation becomes your identity, and any attack on your party feels like an attack on you personally. This makes you defend politicians and policies that harm you because admitting they are wrong would mean admitting you were wrong, and your ego will not allow that.
10) The tenth manipulation is the most insidious of all: you are manipulated into believing you are too smart to be manipulated. Every person reading this thinks the manipulations I described apply to other people, the stupid people, the brainwashed people on the other side. That certainty is itself a manipulation. The moment you believe you are immune is the moment you become most vulnerable.
Here are well over a dozen Fox, CBS, ABC, & NBC local news stations all reading an identical script sent down from their singular overlord to crash & burn alternative media in order to enhance the Oligarchy’s Overwhelming threat to our democracy:
Ultimately we are not consuming news. We are consuming a product manufactured by the richest men in human history, and that product is designed to do one thing: keep us so busy fighting our neighbors that you never notice the chains being fastened around our wrists.
nevertheless it matters hugely to almost everybody which of the two mainstream parties governs. You might not (though these days, you might eventually) get respectable public health care. You would get - as you had, thanks to Democratic policies - food supplements and scientific research and domestic and international rule of law (most of the time) and public education and general lack of cruelty and greed.
This is all hard to dispute & very well stated, but I have to believe that "peaceful solutions" and remedies are still possible. If these "United States" have anything truly "exceptional" in our collective psyche, we ought to be able to resort & advance into a future WITHOUT bloodshed & barbarism.
Unfortunately this is the kind of "both sides-ism" that got Trump elected. The perfect as the enemy of the good. They're all corrupt, let's just stay home and not vote.
I personally cannot bear to watch any of Trump's "speeches" or interviews. However, from the reviews and descriptions, I'm wondering if we've reached the point where having him speak at an event like that just exposes how despicable and unfit he is for any responsible public office, much less President. Does having him there remind everyone what the stakes are?
No legacy media cannot remove the stain. It would only happen by media outlets, both print and televised, were to be purchased by entities truly embracing democracy. Secondly, many of the "journalists and pundits" need to be cast out of these outlets. They have forfeited their integrity, honor, and credibility.
Thank You Steven ..No I don't think you overstated it at all. I wonder how many of the journalists were worried about there jobs and that's why they attended .I don't know . It is a sad day in America when so many are willing to fall in line for a job or whatever. I learned a long time ago that it is easier for me to follow my conscience .. sometimes it took time to see the right path. But once I saw the right way it was pretty easy .. If as you say, they all got up and walked out maybe they would feel good about being a journalist. Trump is one of the most dangerous leaders in the world right now. We have no idea what he is going to do from day to day. Which is why legacy media has to step up to the plate and fight this administration with all the tools it has.
Well, I have two former connections to this event and your comments, Steven. I am a former White House reporter for a financial wire and I am the former executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists. With those credentials, I first will say that I would not spend my valuable retirement years watching a disgraceful exhibition like that on my television. Second, it pains me that the institution that had the late Helen Thomas, et al, has devolved into a sycophantic gaggle of legacy media representatives who forgot the role of journalists and their duty to challenge - not kowtow - to whoever sits at the Resolute Desk. It disgusts me that those in that ballroom tolerate the lies and corruption of the Mussolini wannabe. Nevertheless, I am thankful that there are new media outlets like Substack where we can count on real journalists to give us the real news of the day.
As I've written elswhere, IMO the non-corrupt members of the press ought to have either cancelled or scheduled and then publically and dramatically boycotted this event, making it plain who the fascism-collaborator members of the press are.
Totally agree w you.
In a word…NO. In two words…HELL NO. In three words…THIS IS WRONG. In four words…WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
