I watched the entirety of Mark Carney's speech yesterday to the EU Assembly. It was both gratifying and heart breaking. Gratifying because it reminded me that there are fine, competent, compassionate, strategic and wise leaders in this world who will not be bullied, who value and nurture democracy and who heed the will of their electorate. Heart breaking because I could see how far trump has felled this nation. Without directly condemning trump he was still the elephant in the room and the assembled group was having none of it. Carney spoke of an oak grove planted by Goethe in Germany before WWI. He spoke of how a Canadian soldier gathered up some of those acorns and planted them in Canada. And how those oaks are now a canopy, protecting Europe and Canada, grown from the same roots. It was beautiful, a tour de force of oratory. I've no doubt we will staunch the bleeding this November, but I also have no doubt that we are now a weaker nation, scorned by many, a joke to some. The fever dream will begin to cool in November but we have a long, hard recovery ahead of us. Let us all redouble our efforts to find our footing and our place, although diminished, in this world.

Gratifying and heart-breaking, side by side. Alas, there will be plenty more as dedicated people work through the damage. Thanks for your realistic positivity.

These are but a few (albeit important examples) of the serious reckless harmful destructive behavior of the current administration. It does not need to continue. It cannot continue. We can effect change by voting out the rot. Vote! Have a plan! Help others. Vote!

The surprising madness of the glee destroying what we cherish is shocking.

Very Grateful for your outstanding descriptions and moving account of where we are, but Hope for where we can go.

Unfortunately, Bullyboy just does as he pleases - like demolishing the East Wing, the Rose Garden, the granite landing pad. He has no sense of shame. He does not know the feeling of guilt. And remember, he is a convicted felon and an adjudged rapist. His confederacy of dunces (the Cabinet) are too afraid or intellectually incapable of invoking the 25th Amendment. I hope the federal courts (excluding the Supremes) are wide awake in the 60 days between the election and the seating of the new Congress.

The confederacy of dunces are raking in the dough. That is all they care about. Why would they put an end to it?

After all it is the SCOTUS “conservative” majority that gave him immunity for “official acts”. Now we are seeing why it is NOT in the Constitution.

Why won't any of the other people in congress speak up? There are reports a forklift was running into a column at the Kennedy Center repeatedly. Are we going to wake up and find it bulldozed too?

Steven Beschloss's avatar

While they're sleeping...could happen.

Charlie's avatar

They're all waiting for someone else to do something. And that's not good enough.

Thanks Steven: Great script. As it is said, the Constitution is just a piece of parchment, its the people who abide by its dictates that will prevent the destruction of the nation. We the People. You have a mad hatter, running roughshod through the berry patch, squashing all the berries he can't consume. The man is a danger to the world. You have the Vice President whining for a second chance, such a wimp. It seems the world is moving north while the despot has got the USA heading south. I know the resilience and grit of the American folks; you will turn it around. My faith is in the "We the People"; don't sit this midterm election out. Vote early; go in groups to the polls. Don't let the deplorable few hamper your vote. Godspeed.

Your writing says it all. I was horrified when they were allowed to kill men on boats without any legal verification. Such sickening acts of horror. The major goal of our federal government is to protect citizens. We have seen complete failure by this person who has demonstrated incompetence.

This lunatic regime, rotten to the core, destroys everything it touches in our own capital city and throughout the world! And the top lunatic is the absolute rot initiating all of it.

Steve,

Clear and simple. Thank you. Re the Kennedy Center- The lunatic in the White House - If I can't have it, nobody can! Pathetic.

It was obvious that trump was nuclear bom for decades. Finally reacting too little too late.

I’ve had narcissistic temper tantrums directed at me and as Rep. Beatty said, they are childish. They’re also stunningly abusive and

manipulative. It is usually unleashed when the narcissist either can’t get his way or when others make demands, because it is above all, a manipulation for dominance. But knowing it’s a manipulation doesn’t make it any easier to

cope with.

Malignant narcissist is too unclear. Esoteric. Hes an evil fascist who is killing, threatening and crushing those who tell the truth.

Carney's statement, quoted above, is "no one" is going to dictate to Canada about its languages, culture, and international agreements. Notice he didn't say Trump. That's because more than 70 million Americans voted for him as our 47th president after witnessing the debacle of Trump as our 45th president. In other words, Carney recognized that it was Americans who voted for this monster and an elite slew of Americans who continue to support him from the halls of Congress and the once esteemed SCOTUS.

For fear that a future American electorate might elect someone like him, say Vance or Rubio or some Fox Talking Head, Carney is staying neutral on the condemnation - it's not just Trump; it's us.

Canadian outrage is concurrently broad and focused. Carney is criticizing a people who could be so easily bamboozled by a charlatan and manipulated by his venal Geppettos, Bannon, Vought, Miller, Thiel and others. He's written us off as pereninally unreliable and he's focused on shoring up the void created; not just until 2028, but for the long run. Carney knows that the damage these folks are doing isn't going to be repaired internally for many years. He's turned to China and Europe to shore up the immediate problem, and he's been welcomed with open arms.

Canada is strong. It can stand up to bullies. Others will as well. But when the bullies are gone, what will we do? There may be elections in the future. ("May" isn't a typo.) Will we make a similar mistake?

So much for hope. Like Bandy Lee predicting doom but clothing it in technical terms.
