Start with the fact that this is illegal. With a decline in crime, there is no emergency. Which, even if it was true, mobilization is to last only 30 days demonstrating intent of careful use.
Then to the fact DJT only wants to be “free-wheeling” in Blue cities and states with Democrat governors.
Then to the crime stats that show the comparison between Red and Blue states, with the majority of high crime areas being GOP governed.
Then to the governing reality that the President is responsible for all Americans, not Red or Blue, and to the rule of law.
Hostage negotiation is highly specialized; done under duress where life & death can be decided in seconds. It should not be applied in normal or typical situations. Leveraging some sort of understanding of the other person as “tactical empathy” to get what you want is nothing more than gloried manipulation. A type of understanding masquerading as empathy with ‘tactical’ added to appeal to tough guys.
The Washington Post *and* The New York Times have been facilitating Trump since at least last year.
The article you discuss here was written by a staff writer; however, *the entire editorial board* last week signed an opinion piece that represents the Washington Post's overall voice. The opinion piece is called "Involuntary Commitment Got a Bad Rap," and it celebrates Trump's executive order to make being homeless and mentally ill arrestable offenses. I discuss it here: https://artistlike.substack.com/p/bezoss-washington-post-involuntary
Also last week, the Post's editorial board published an opinion celebrating that Trump will not have to pay any penalty for his real-estate fraud in New York City.
...and on and on and on. Honestly, The New York Times's coverage has been even more explicitly egregious. The way that the Washington Post has primarily facilitated Trump is by choosing *not* to cover a lot of important events. Constant lies of omission this year.
A lot of journalists have resigned from the Post in protest over the past year, most recently Jonathan Capehart, who like all the others has denounced the Post's violations of journalistic ethics and betrayal of democracy.
I know this discussion is on The Washington Post, and other legacy papers, but I have to express my profound disappointment in Washington Week with the Atlantic. I tuned in before the meeting with Putin in Alaska, and these people were talking as if it were a serious diplomatic effort. They keep trying to fit Trump into the box of a normal president. There is no longer a box, and Trump was never normal.
You're right it does read like a parody. I canceled my Washington Post subscription and didn't bother to read the remaining days I had paid for . I know they still have good reporters working there but overall I don't trust what WaPo writes now. Since I canceled they keep sending me discount offers to get me to renew. As if that was the issue. Barf
When you read my book, A Graver Danger, about what journalists missed in education, this will seem par for the course. It sure does for me! Journalists would interview me describing the abuse and law breaking I experienced as a teacher and say “you must have done something wrong. They need great teachers” as if of course administrators wouldn’t ever do anything wrong. I even had one agree to call the Illinois State Board of Education about the lawless withholding of my dismissal hearing decision. They were lying and saying they couldn’t get it from the hearing officer. They didn’t want me to go up through the courts with my proof they submitted an altered document in that record. They wanted to keep it from me illegally. Perhaps they knew I’d publish that document in a book one day since it is in my book. Because she called as a journalist, she scared them into finding it. Did she follow up? No. She only called because I said, “You think I did something wrong but we know the state did something wrong as the decision is mandated in thirty days and a year had passed.” These same thick heads failed to consider fascists had taken hold of education as they’re failing to see dictatorship in full bloom.
He wrote a fantasy piece about this as if he’s a writer, not a journalist. Fantasy writing paved the way for Trump by allowing our schools to stop producing citizens and I can’t get any of you to investigate and report on that so show me the journalism. Set an example for what journalism is to be. It’s not to be assuming those leading education are good guys and teachers are bad guys. It’s not ignoring the teacher whistleblowers at WhiteChalkCrime.com. But that’s what it has been since at least 2002.
Legacy media has joined the triad of sycophancy along with law and corporations

There is no WaPo. Maybe someday they will be back. But right now they are gone.
Not just WP; NYT close behind them . Check out this article.
“This World-Renowned Negotiator Says Trump’s Secret Weapon is Empathy.”— in the Times yet, not The Onion.
Only paper that tells it straight is THE GAURDIAN, a Brit paper

This was not worthy of being published as article. It’s more like a bad info-mercial for the negotiator. The article did not note the huckster had less complimentary observations a few years ago. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/17/ex-fbi-negotiator-chris-voss-on-trump-pelosi-shutdown-talks.html

Schwartzman will go nowhere after this article. He might as well been sitting in The Convict’s obnoxious table meeting.
Maybe “scribe” is a better word for the job now.
Great discussion as usual. Wake up media!
Thanks, Helen.

Last month, they published a column arguing on behalf of gender-based discrimination: https://artistlike.substack.com/p/washington-posts-bigotry-excusing
