I’m puzzled as to why the universities don’t give a figurative middle finger to the Orange One. After all, they have endowments worth billions and they could easily replace the federal money to continue the important research they’ve been doing. As for the law firms, the big ones that capitulated, are rolling in cash. The partners make millions and I have to believe that there is a stash in one or more banks for these firms to fall back on. And then there’s the Times. We know the editorial pages are and always have been separate from the news pages. Nevertheless, one half of the Times staff isn’t communicating with the other. Hence the sanewashing the newsroom perpetrated throughout the campaign to make 47 appear “normal.” As a former journalist and one-time leader of the Society of Professional Journalists, I am disgusted.

Agreed. It’s like the billionaires whose billions don’t provide a buffer and they act with cowardice.

The bully’s excuses may change but the objective is always to gain more power & expand his control. It will continue until someone slows his roll. These cluckers are making it much easier for the Orange Menace. Instead of making it difficult, the cluckers allow him to pick them off one by one.

It is not a mystery why this is happening. He has this power because it is given to him. Too many voters gave it to him; too many legislators; too much of the news media; too many of our institutions; too many billionaires.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic to see those who reached major pinnacles of wealth & power now floundering & bewildered by such an ancient playbook. One many of them used to get where they are.

So my acerbic comment on Mark's Substack, now that the NYT is finally showing muscle and acting with a sense of morality, is that I shall have to start using my subscription to the paper for more than just playing Wordle. Who knows, I might actually have to read it?

Of course, the NYT and other mainstream news outlets would go a long way towards redeeming their reputations if they were to conduct serious investigations into possible insider trading by Trump and his coterie in the face of his ability to move the markets up and down with a single threat about instating or removing tariffs.

I totally agree and am actually shocked that some (not all) have not been on the front lines to protect our constitutional rights and use their relatively deep pockets (compared with individual targeted Americans) to stand all the way up to his bullying. He’s full of bravado until he is challenged. Then, as Rachel Maddow elucidated on Wednesday night; he caves. Unfortunately, leaving everything a complete mess in his wake.

...it was kind of you to call NYT history checkered. They, along with WaPo, have been cancelled in this house under "C" for "cowards". Pro-Publica and Guardian is where I pay for new...

First off…who would engage a Law Firm that allowed itself to be intimidated by a Convicted Felon and “strong arm extortion tactics?”

Now completely off subject…but with encouraging possibilities on the Horizon! Behold…..The concept of a “Shadow” Cabinet aka, “The People’s Cabinet!”. (See Substack’s Timothy Synder’s article) It can serve as a basic training course from which new (Badly Needed) Leaders can emerge. If previously successful Cabinet Heads are chosen as the “Shadowers” they’ll be a lot less likely to be fooled by the “Smoke and Mirrors” of the imposters. In addition, knowing somebody who knows what they should be doing is closely watching their every move…tRump’s laughable aka dangerous Cabinet Heads will be a lot less likely to continue making the really stupid moves they’re are now making, especially if the results are widely broadcast.

Therefore, we should also have a Shadow News Reporting source. Of course, any “Shadow” organization will require a cadre of smart Lawyers to make sure they don’t run afoul of the Law because they’ll be closely watched, remember tRump’s got SCOTUS in his “pocket!” On that note, perhaps SCOTUS needs a “Shadow” Watchdog as well. Based on what has been going on in Washington et al, I’d say there would be any number of willing volunteers to offer to man these new “positions!”
