My dear, dear American friends and family: YOU must stop this, indeed. And you need to figure out soon just how you are going to do that, instead of pretending/wishing/hoping the midterms will save you (they will not). If you don't overthrow this regime, and soon, they will go to war with your former allies and that will bring disaster to your country. Please just stop for a moment and try to imagine what war with Canada and Europe would look like. If you're not thinking about that, you should be. We are. Elbows up.
Carol, You’re absolutely correct…what other choice do we have. Didn’t America face a similar issue 1776? tRump’s army are MURDERING American Citizens now. He is growing his army as we speak.
I notice you do not have a realistic suggestion. Attempting to “overthrow the regime” or anything that looks like it would allow this president to invoke the Insurrection Act, employ the military & attack civilians — all things he’s been itching to do since T1. SCOTUS just ruled against him on otherwise using the military & therefore he pulled the National Guard out of the cities. That means a line was clearly drawn on what are illegal action / orders. It was not the line he attempted to draw.
It is always easier to tell other people what they must do than to have a plan or do it. It is easier to tell people to start a civil war if you won’t need to fight it. Please just stop for a moment and thing what you are wishing/hoping for; pretending such turmoil here would not adversely Canada and Europe.
I don’t normally respond to absurd statements like yours but it pissed me off! Please read Carol’s statement again. She is standing up for us Americans and quite frankly, is standing beside us. She does not have to come up with a solution as that is our job and we will do it. You should apologize to her because, Ann, we must stay together to fight this regime and welcome outside help, whether it be physical or mental. I am the daughter of Holocaust victims and I know of what I speak about.
Thanks, Marlene. As Joyce Vance always says, "We are in this together" and I know that to be true (see my response below to Ann's second post.) These are terrifying times, but if we don't find a way to put our fears aside in order to stand and fight, we are lost.
So true, Carol, and that’s what a lot of us are doing with joining like-minded people in groups. Being in Indivisible has honestly brought some very important people in my life as friends. That, in itself, is a gift. I send you many hugs and just know, we will prevail.
Actually I’m objecting to her solution / suggestion / instruction to “overthrow the regime”. I don’t find that supportive. In these times it is nothing but dangerous to suggest insurrection. It is not even realistic. You can disagree.
My point is such talk is easy to say by those who don’t think they will bear the consequences & don’t think about how it would work. Cheering for an insurrection in the US from the sidelines is not my idea of “help” or support.
It’s fine that you disagree or are pissed off. You are as entitled as anyone else. No, I am not going to apologize because I am as entitled to my opinion as you and Carol are entitled to yours.
Hi Ann, I appreciate how frightened you are -- I'm scared to death as well. I am sad that you jumped to so many quick conclusions about me and what I am saying, because you know nothing about me! I am an American citizen living in Canada for more than 40 years; I have many, many family members in the US including first-degree relatives, as well as very dear friends, so I do not consider myself "on the sidelines" at all. And because I live in a country that your president regularly threatens to annex, for that reason I also do not consider myself on the sidelines. I don't have a "solution" e.g. I do not have advice to give on HOW to achieve regime change, but I am a student of history and politics, and after watching the US descend into fascism I believe strongly that the only way forward now is to overthrow this tyranny. I understand what this means. There will be blood shed and lives lost. I do not say that lightly, and believe me, it is not easy to do so, because unlike what you assume, I WILL bear the consequences, and I have given -- every damn day -- a great deal of thought to how we could save democracy. And please note that I say "we" because when you sleep next to an elephant you better watch out when he rolls over. Canada has long lived in the shadow of the US, and what happens there causes earthquakes here -- we are so closely tied that we cannot escape your travails. I'm not "cheering for an insurrection;" rather, I am sick in my soul at the prospect of so much death and destruction. But at this point I see no other way forward if we are going to save our countries. I wish you all the best, Ann. I know we are in this fight together.
My comments do not reflect fear. No one burns their house down to see if there is a better replacement. Common sense.
To me, being in Canada across the border means you are by definition on the sidelines. You don’t feel that way but you won’t be here doing what you advocate.
Given the extensive potential damage I am somewhat surprised you’ve weighed consequences & still believe it is worth it. Although other Canadians suggest the same or similar ideas.
A regime change effort by the public would pit one US group against both the US military & supporters of the gov’t. Chaos would invite economic devastation across the globe & adversaries into the US. No one knows the outcome or how long the aftermath would last. Rebellions are many; successful ones few.
I like, the overwhelming majority of Americans wish only good things for you and all our neighbors to the North. I do not see the good side of this for anyone. It looks more like a lose/lose.
They will continue their reign of terror in spite of what we see and hear with our own eyes and ears. There is no turning back, we must find a way to stop this regime's madness. It's up to, We the People. Was yesterday America's Tiananmen Square? What a tragedy, Renee Good was murdered, RIP.
Two more people shot in Portland Oregon today by Federal agents. You are correct, the violence against US citizens is destroying our liberties and freedoms. The regime and the supreme leader has no intention of following the civil rights guaranteed by our Constitution, which they swore to uphold.
Do you really think the will be an election in November? Do you really believe the Supreme Court and Republican Congress will turn against him? How many more Americans will die peacefully exercising their freedom of speech and assembly? It's clear to me, we may well be looking at the end of American Democracy. What will, 'We the People' choose to do about it?
We must intensify our No Kings participation to get at first more than 10 M participants and then build it further so that two weeks before midterm Election Day at least 20Million participate peacefully and then elect Democrats to carry the Senate as well as the House! Without those two majorities kiss our democracy goodbye immediately! Must win the Senate and then impeach him! All else is not enough! WE CAN AND MUST DO IT!
Don't bet on Democrats to get rid of Noem and Trump. Six approved of Noem and many of those grabbing headlines approved Trump's Cabinet. Voters gave Republicans the right to put Trump and his Gang of Misfits in charge of America. Democrats voting NO didn't change the outcome, but a YES vote showed approval of Trump and his choices. Look it up!
6 is nowhere close to representing the Democrats. I wasn’t pleased that A FEW broke ranks and approved some of the nominees. But let’s not pretend that means they want to keep them. The truth is short of impeachment AND conviction there is no way to get rid of them. Dem votes didn’t matter and 6 threw them away trying not the be the party of “no” to appease constituents or hoping for a working relationship with the Cabinets.
And as you say Dem votes didn’t change the outcomes.
Could we come up with something we want that is feasible. Not merely noise but something with substance a minority party which does not control even 1 committee; can’t make 1 rule & can’t control what gets to the floor for a vote (including amendments) can accomplish? Are we unable to find things being proposed by Dems that we can support?
Let’s concentrate our time on appealing to every fair minded independent who would be a potential voter, as well as those business oriented Republicans, to join us in electing Democrats in November inasmuch if we don’t win the Senate as well as the House, he will be the King and Dictator for life!
I agree. We need the persuadables. Although having the mid-terms disrupted or an attempt to cancel them is possible, I’m weary of those who may be turning it into a self-fulfilling prophesy.
Meanwhile —
• Today — Jeffries discharge petition to extend Health Care Subsidies gained 9 GOP votes. Next step: House Vote [Note: In a floor vote the bill had 17 GOP votes & goes to the Senate.]
• Yesterday — War Powers Resolution: Senate advanced a resolution yesterday to limit DJT’s authority to conduct further military attacks in Venezuela. - now on to the House
Do sit in demonstrations. That’s what was done during the Vietnam war and civil rights. Sit in front of the ICE facility and FBI. Sit in front of the Capitol and White House. Marches alone won’t do it.
I’m so angry. I’m so heartbroken. I’m so frustrated. How does it seem so many “Americans” don’t seem distraught by what is happening. We no longer live in a democracy. America is being raped and pillaged by those who are spiteful, greedy, and corrupt. We are so lost. Our children deserve better. The world deserves better.
She was also a poet who won the 2020 Academy of American Poets Prize. Remember what happened to Lorca? It's beyond belief that ICE killed her.....but maybe it's not. I hope the murderer is charged in state court, where he can be convicted.
After reading yesterday’s Godalmighty news of the Murder of Renee Good and reading more this morning about the rump administration’s fictionalization of events, events caught of video, I felt a wave of depression sweep over my whole body, starting with my scalp and moving all the way to my feet. It feels like I have been turned into stone. Even my eyes hurt. My country, what is happening to you? Stop this madness before we all go insane.
The fact that agents refused a doctor's attempt to render aid after they shot her shows there is no depth to their depravity. We are all now Renee Nicole Good!
My heart is broken. For that poor young child, for her wife, for her dog, for her family, friends and community. And for all of us in this country who still have a heart and compassion and an understanding of the difference between right and wrong. My heart is deeply wounded and I am grieving.
As for the rest of “us” I no longer have anything… no feelings, no desire to have anything to do with them, no ability to see past their inhumanity, racism, hatred, and ignorance. They are dead to me, and I will fight with every cell in my body to take this country back from their evil, petty, destructive agenda. This is the United States of America, goddammit.
This is so painful to learn. A neighborhood left without a kind neighbor…a child left without his beloved mother…a nation that will allow these tragedies to continue…a government that is best labeled a regime. We have hit a new low in truth telling and civility. Thanks for your writing, Steven. We’re in desperate need of more Thomas Paine’s like you!
It's a wonder to me how anyone can look at the videos of what actually occurred and the voices of the eye witnesses be so divergent from the comments being made by King Donny and his cohorts. Where were the agents who were supposedly being threatened.? Which one was run over and where was he taken to? The hospital? Wait, not one ICE guy was hurt. Did Donny not look at the video? Thank you Governor Walz for finally stating, "where's the decency?" Indeed, it is not in our federal government. It will be interesting to see how DOJ handles this one. No need for a trial.
25th Amendment, Impeachment must be used! Congress must act NOW. NO MORE excuses. Coalition of Dems, Republicans must act. I've emailed my senators, rep to get this going. If we don't act now, we 'won't have a countrry' or democracy anymore!
Democrats have shown they can elevate protest and accountability—today’s War Powers vote proves that. We now need an equally visible, sustained response to ICE and Border Patrol actions.
As uncomfortable as it is, we should listen not only to Trump and Noem, but to those who openly blame the victim—and confront that narrative directly.
We should also be honest about Democratic failures: months of unconstitutional, cruel, and indefensible actions met with ineffective opposition.
The FBI’s decision to block cooperation with Minnesota officials only deepens the alarm, especially when contrasted with recent state–federal cooperation in other cases.
Under the present 787 Constitution there i NOTHING WE THE GOVERNED can do to insure justice except once agun ineffectively protest in then streets to a deaf and blind Congress and legal (?) system. "Justice" is up to the spineless hypnotized politicians, Justice(?) Department, and Department of Homeland Security (?) who protect the criminals who work for ICE, the local police who fail to protect their citizens, and the military active duty and National Guard who follow illega lorders, ignore their right and duty to refuse to obey them and act like immoral, ignorant robots for the Füher who is killing everyone and everything he touches. Our ONLY remaining LEGAL recourse is to MODERNIZE the CONSTITUTION and kick the bastards out of office and the let the responsible people in our legal system and the juries selected for the trials do their duty instead.
My dear, dear American friends and family: YOU must stop this, indeed. For what it’s worth, I wrote my congressional representative, a Democrat, first thing this morning and said “Kristi Noem must go!”
