Imho, McConnell is the one man who has done the most to destroy our democracy. He has had many opportunities to make decisions that would benefit our country, but he always failed the test. It’s past time that he leave government, I’ll be glad to see the back of him.

McConnell is everything you say he is and worse, but he Voted NO to confirm Tulsi Gabbard - the only Republican - and he voted NO to confirm Robert Kennedy, Jr. - the only Republican. He voted NO to confirm Lori Chavez-DeRemer - along with Rand Paul, while 17 Democrats voted AYE, including KELLY, GALLEGO, SLOTKIN, OSSOFF, SCHIFF, WHITEHOUSE, WARNOCK, HASSAN and the two women from Nevada. and the two men from Colorado. Fetterman did not vote. The No voters were right in their assessment after listening to the confirmation hearings.

I am panicking, Steven. We are running out of time! First Bill Pulte, then this other punk who participated in the Insurrection of 2021? Republicans have been seized by a creeping authoritarian madness and acquiescence that, like some perennial noxious weed, keeps emerging even as we try to contain it. The slush fund may be on pause for the moment, but immunity from IRS investigation for Trump is not. John Bolton has been felled and is perhaps headed to prison. Never liked the guy, but he has been targeted and the bullet has hit its mark.

I am feeling overwhelmed and a sense of dread is dripping into my morning coffee that has been brewed with hope for the last few days. Republicans are once again enabling Trump’s ‘brown shirts’ by giving them oxygen and freedom to abuse our citizens in the form of extra taxpayer funds…again. The Supreme Court has destroyed the Voting Rights Act…again. Yikes. Yikes. Yikes.

Yes this is heart breaking

Excerpt from Bill Pulte’s statement from your link.

…”Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause.

Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience.

They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias;

they stood for professionalism against chaos.

For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story

I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified.

To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. “

This catapults me back to becoming aware of the state owned Russia Media, and my own sadness then at the age of 10, for the Russian people… and here we are facing the facets of the same oppression.

Prayers

Heartbreaking indeed. This all could have been avoided in 2021 with Mitch's no vote. He was a poor leader only made worse by his vote and leadership.

Mitch McConnell words mean nothing. He denied Obama the SCOTUS replacement. He could've led the conviction of Trump in the Senate after the 2nd impeachment. All for what he thought was power, but instead he has been marginalized and passed by the Trumpists, like the dinosaur he is.

And Bolton is going to jail for what try trump was exonerated.

60 minutes is one of multiple tragedies. AI and tech companies are destroying the country. Listen to congressional hearings and debate and you'll want to leave as soon as possible.

And the national Democratic leadership is Pathetically weak.

Anyone else heard the acronym “LSC”? Lucky Sperm Club? Refers to silver spoon (platinum ladle?) types with family wealth and brand but low talent. This guy did not even know mortgage markets. Plenty of experts in the mortgage field. He is not one. Now the broadcast journalism major with zero background intellectually or in work experience in the field adds to the list of utterly unqualified appointees. A wresting widow to run education was the worst. But this one is dangerous for geopolitics. And domestic security of those he targets. Education was dangerous for investment in human capital. Maybe he can buy “Geopolitics for Dummies.” Or an atlas to see where the countries are. Trump strikes again.

Thank you Professor Beschloss. The "Fourth Estate" is what the press is. When the press operates as an unofficial fourth branch of government, checking the power of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Yet when censored or gone what will come about was clearly foreseen 250 years ago.

"Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech." ~ Benjamin Franklin

We’ve been reminded by so many on the importance of a free press. Here are just a few.

“If a nation expects to be ignorant & free, in a state of civilisation, it expects what never was & never will be. The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty & property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

“No government ought to be without censors: and where the press is free, no one ever will. If the government is virtuous, it need not fear the fair operation of attack and defence. Nature has given to man no other means of sifting out the truth either in religion, law, or politics than the free press. I think it as honorable to the government neither to know, nor notice. Government sycophants or censors, as it would be undignified and criminal to pamper the former and persecute the latter.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

“The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The freedom of the press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people." ~ Justice Hugo Black (1971)

"Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy." ~ Walter Cronkite

“60 Minutes” has been on television for close to 58 years, having premiered on September 24, 1968. It has died at 57.68 years… Our nation is about to celebrate our 250th birthday, yet will it also meet its end at 249.68 years…

Yes, the task of breaking this hostile regime’s power rests with all of us.… Vote come November..

McConnell plenty of company. Trumpists and his supporters are extreme and ruthless. And they respond by blaming Biden. And Maine candidate is an oyster farmer with no relevant experience and bizarre violent conduct. With the governor ran she was rejected. The US is on a decline. People without wealth and power are doomed.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

Ah, but Bernie endorsed the oyster farmer and so did Elizabeth Warren. The decline is not limited to the Republicans! Those who overlook the behavior of a party candidate are defeating the Party and dooming America.
