“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” - African proverb

We are rising together.

That was fabulous! In every way. Substance. Style and Tone. . . Ps. You said no kings but wed be FAR better off with King Charles and Camilla. The rallies should be called no vile corrupt thieving anti American despots.

Steven Beschloss's avatar

Thx. Nothing like having a king advocating for democracy.

JBR's avatar

Exactly! Oh the irony. At nearly 250th years of existence King George has to explain what democracy is to the US President and congress. We should erect marble arch in HIS honor.

Ann Sharon's avatar

Yes, in large part because King Charles and Camilla have mostly ceremonial roles, act as ambassadors of goodwill and bring in a lot of tourist dollars.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Trump, Melania, the whole of their capos and enablers, actually know they are full of shit. They know that they lie every time they talk. The projection of these fools is astounding. That's their tell: if they accuse our side with heinous crimes of thought and action, then they are really saying the quiet part out loud, about themselves and their whole rotten enterprise. No wonder they can't sleep at night.

K Brahney's avatar

That is exactly true about the lies they tell. It is ALWAYS about something they themselves are doing/ have done. In fact, it is such a reliable indicator, we might as well use it like a translation app!

Truly one of your most important and impactful posts

Thank you, Frank.

Thank you...I'm still feeling very low... how will Louisiana get out from under the foot of these monsters... will a constitution loving candidate even have a chance to balance this in that state...or is it hopeless...May 1 hopefully they all boycott ...no work, no school, no spending today

K Brahney's avatar

I'm joining the boycott and going to a rally this evening, but I still feel as you do. Disgusted, disheartened. I know I will rise again, but right now I just don't see how.

GingerLee's avatar

I wonder if my town has a rally... I'll go check.. we are pretty active here Evanston Il

K Brahney's avatar

I bet there is one. I live in Virginia, but a dear friend of mine is in Evanston and regularly goes to rallies. I hope you find a group! Being at rallies is an undeniable demonstration of our opposition. A way to make our voices seen as well as heard.

This was such a great editorial. You rounded the bases while invoking the ‘basest’ among who are nesting comfortably in the glow of this administration. Such is the Supreme Court, to cite an obvious example. And then there is Melania, who cannot put two words together and whose statements smack of a Stephen Miller-tutored AI bot. As for the ‘86’ of it all, I’m just waiting for Trump to rail against the scene in the “Sound of Music” where the children are going off to bed, singing, “So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, good bye…”. Oy.

Steven Beschloss's avatar

Thanks, Ellen. And yes...these goons will find more ways to go lower.

Ellen Deschatres's avatar

I hope the limbo stick going lower and lower finally breaks the back of this administration!

We cannot allow them to steal our joy! Fighting back by laughing and mocking them is another First Amendment right, and all of us need laughter to prevent them from reaching their goal of making us as miserable as they are.

The effort of dt to go after Comey is ironic. The pebbles incident is almost laughable, but Comey is no friend to those of us who opposed dt in 2016. His announcement that he was reopening the Clinton investigation in October 2016, right before the election, might be responsible for the political hell we are living through. Comey acknowledges this possibility in an April 2019 Axios interview. While I despise him for his pre-election announcement, I will fully defend his right to arrange pebbles on a beach any way he wants to. With all the horror in our world, dt and Blanche are analyzing pebbles and taking their stand against free speech.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Thanks for the reality check. What's encouraging is that Comey, who was either malicious or unbelievably obtuse in 2016, is now standing up and taking the heat, apparently with a sense of humor.

As a retired chef, I can confirm for you that in our kitchen whenever we used the term “86” it meant that we were out of an ingredient or a menu item. That’s all. Nothing more. On my Facebook page, I posted a photo of three quarters, a dime and one Penny next to one quarter, two dimes and two pennies. If seashells are the problem, I’ve solved it. ;-).

Steven Beschloss's avatar

The coins...funny. Thx.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Since in bygone years I spent plenty of time as a kitchen flunky and pinch-hit dishwasher (and had plenty of waitron friends), I remember that. Your creative use of quarters and a dime and a penny cracked me up. Might have to steal it for my FB page.

I too prefer laughing!

I have never felt as low as I do right now. The Supreme Court majority should all be impeached and thrown in jail for destroying our Constitution. Jail, with no term limits! I am so sick of them all.

Steven Beschloss's avatar

We'll get through this.

Ann Sharon's avatar

It is very discouraging. But we can’t let them make us defeat ourselves. That is part of the psychology behind doing so many ugly things all the time. As for the gerrymandering, it is quite possible the electorate is angry enough & has changed enough that new lines won’t save them. IOW, lines drawn to destroy the concentrated power of minority voters could take in enough unhappy independents / unaffiliated and upset voters to offset it.

The DNC began launching a national voter registration initiative which will be needed for midterms GOTV (get out the vote). We can do this!

I lend my support and blessings to you. 🫶🏼

Thank you. I really appreciate that!

Thank You Steven .. I so hope you are right and we will win in November despite the set back by the Supreme Court. Melania makes my skin crawl. I remember in his first term that people thought that she was trapped in the marriage. I never believed that. I read that she was more in tune with his thinking then his children. You are absolutley right what he is doing to Comey and Kimmel he is doing to us. It is frustrating and heartbreaking. lost in america

Steven Beschloss's avatar

Hang in there, Mary.

It is more than their fragile psyches at play. They wish to leverage every possible moment for political advantage to silence us. Threats against humor are born of the deep felt fears of authoritarians everywhere & the need for total control. We’re seeing signs that the harder they push against freedom and norms the more people push back. They are fearful. We must keep pushing back.

We should also track not just their actions but our wins. Not only the ones at the ballot box and in the courts but also ones like the House caving and voting to end the DHS shutdown without funding ICE and Border Patrol. While it is true the Senate will attempt to pass the funding in a reconciliation bill with other funding, it’s not clear that it will get past the parliamentarian.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Exactly right about the importance of pushing back. I do believe that Trump-era Republicans -- both the MAGAs and anti-democracy conservatives using Trump for their own ends -- live in a self-perpetuating bubble and are greatly overestimating their support, especially when it comes to crashing the economy and this petty revenge stuff.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

There've been plenty of 86 47 signs at local pro-democracy rallies. We're wondering when the Justice Department will come after us. OTOH, we're in Massachusetts, which has a Democratic governor, Maura Healey, and a kick-ass attorney general, Andrea Campbell, so we're probably pretty safe for the time being.

Cathy Brugnone's avatar

As always, Steven, on point piece! I’m hopeful that we will get the outcome we desire at the midterms but I am also worried, to be honest, because of the level of corruption and trickery this administration wallows in. On a lighter note, let’s make Melania the new Karen!

Barbara Shields's avatar

Humor will save us from these malignant stains on our body politic. If you haven't seen it yet, watch Kimmel's Rezyne clip - it will make your day!
