Steven, I take the liberty of calling you by your first name because we are twinned by our deep concern for our country. I’m not sure of your age, but I will be 88 next month and have been brought low with the certainty that I can’t celebrate my longevity.

Because time is short, I am grateful you tagged Republicans “anti-American cowards.” I think we must reinforce that description.

Instead of talking about Speaker of the House, we should rename him “Cowardly Speaker of the House.” And add that description to every Republican member of Congress.

Perhaps if they hear it enough, they may feel shame. But while we’re waiting for that miracle, you and other journalists, and the esteemed DOJ employees must continue to report and highlight the evils of this administration.

Although they are zeroing in on the nomination of Todd Blanche, their cautionary letter could serve for every member of this criminal crew.

Their words: “No matter how cognitively impaired and reckless the convicted felon becomes, he will never become less cruel, cheap or hostile to justice and the rule of law” perfectly describes Trump as well as Blanche.

Add “dangerous” to the trio of adjectives, and these members of the DOJ have perfectly described our sitting/sleeping/criminal president.

I am 82 and I agree 100% with Escapades. Trump needs to be impeached and Blanche not confirmed. Our country is in a mess, and the lawless, cowardly Republican Congress is complicit. We all must vote for Democrats in the coming elections.

You too are doing great work, Ms Soloway. Thank you so much.

Oh Helen, twinning me with Steven Beschloss is a great honor. Thank you for your early birthday present!

Republicans demonstrate daily that they are unable to feel shame. If their response to Trump’s demands is to ask how high to jump, they have no power. They just want to line their pockets.

I like this news. A huge thank you to the judges and former DOJ employees for speaking up. Republicans need to grow a pair and seriously consider whether they love this country.

Jon Stewart’s latest podcast episode on YouTube is a worthy watch. Guests were Jack Smith and the former FBI Director.

Thanks for the updates. Let’s keep rising up!

The hope that is inspired by the 1200 former DOJ employees and the judges on a bus must be carried along by ordinary citizens who believe in democracy, and that no one is above the law. It is incumbent upon us to vote, protest, contact our members of Congress, and anything else, within the law, and peaceful that will advance the cause of the Constitution and the laws that govern this, hopefully, great country of the future.

Thank you Steven. I watched your interview with the two judges yesterday and it gave me hope, as does this article.

Steven Beschloss's avatar

Not my interview, but happy to hear, Helen.

I echo the above comments…but can clearly see that the responsibility for our government’s current impairment lies ultimately with the Republicans in congress who could, in short order, remove this president and anyone else who has committed crimes on his behalf. This includes various people in his cabinet. Americans as a whole hunger for justice, for accountability and for righteousness and demand it from their elected officials. The Republicans in congress have taken turns, one by one, to put their fingers in the hole in the dyke of accountability. If and only if, they abandon their lawless posts, justice will run like a ‘mighty stream’. I’m here for it.

Thank you Steven! This is indeed encouraging.

I was struck by how the judges broke the mold on these visits while keeping with a non-partisan message of hope for those who need it. It’s also a kindly nudge to think more deeply for those who need that. Looking joyous and engaging, carrying flowers but dressed in their distinctive robes.

Drumpf’s funds to pay E Jean Carroll are held under the Court’s control. His appeals are nothing more than harassment, an ego problem and as the court said the “delay” game. Here’s hoping his appeal is turned away quickly by the Appeals Court. The idea that SCOTUS would make history by reconsidering its refusal to hear his appeal to them is laughable.

Overwhelmingly outstanding article, overall, and for me especially the additional information about the exorbitant Hurricane of Destruction Blanche whose acute focus is on rapidly assailing the universe of our Justice System…..

“They” are in a speed of light hurry to bring us down levying multiple assaults across our systems.

It is a Nightmare

Grateful for you enlightening us about these organizations, and

“The week-long tour—organized by Democracy Rising Collaborative and Keep Our Republic—is a reminder that there’s no silver bullet for how we save our democracy.”

You give us Hope with this information:

…”This week a collection of 25-30 retired and sitting judges got on a bus to meet everyday citizens in streets, town squares, community centers, donut shops and even a Cracker Barrel.

Their purpose: to advocate for the rule of law and its centrality to our democracy.”

The clip. 👏

Beautifully written

Thank you

A hopeful article, indeed. The letter submitted by the former DOJ employees could be an inspiration, one would hope, that might sway some opinions on Blanche, the sycophant's sycopant.

Something else that also provides me with hope, is the continued work of attorneys Norm Eisen and Marc Elias. Relentless individuals for democracy, to say the least.

And of course reading, on a daily basis, the likes of Steven Beschloss, Robert Reich, and Heather Cox Richardson. Perhaps we will make it through this mess....hope, hope.

Thanks you Steven: I suppose the other world leaders at Ankara were quite pleased when Trump fell asleep at the conference. He is a danger anytime but less when he sleeps. Thank God for all those beautiful talented justices carrying the message of democracy and the republic into the zone and also taking it into elementary schools , explaining the law to the up and coming young voters. With the depletion of the workforce in areas such as DOD, DNI, CIA , FBI and others it has left the USA in dire straits. Not only your belittled allies know how vulnerable you are , your enemies also know. Trump could vanish tomorrow but nothing would change until you get rid of the Heritage Foundation cabal , Project 2025 and Citizens united. I'm a bit of a dreamer , but its nice to dream of a congress with members that only want to serve the American populace rather than self.

It doesn’t take a lawyer or judge to know Blanche is inept and solely acting as T…p’s personal attorney rather than the guardian of our set of laws. Thus I’d invite anyone who is mindful of the necessity of having an independent Justice Department to sign on to this letter as friends of the Court of Public Opinion. We are right. T…p and his toadies and sycophants are dead wrong. Problem is that there are too many Blanche-like people to choose from. Get rid of T…p to begin the healing process. Blanche is a symptom of everything that is wrong in this administration and should be out of a job.

Five million? A drop in his corrupt bucket. $83.3 million, still accruing interest, will be the final slap at this bitch excuse of a man, president and human being.

I admire the judges who wrote and signed the letter, but in the end, they are just words. And it's too little, too late.

Mitch McConnell (who I very much doubt had a 20 minute conversation with Andy Beshear) is one of many cowardly republicans who kept Trump in office and allowed for his re-election. He also aggressively made sure that he ground the Senate to a halt, making it a useless governing body for years. Only his actual death will stop his iron grip on this once powerful branch.

I believe it will be the same for Trump. Only his death will free us from him. He cares nothing for words, especially the words that make up the laws that are supposed to govern him and/or direct his actions.

Who is going to make him pay E. Jean Carroll?

Who is going to make him withdraw nominations for incompetent, criminal people to high office? He has acted with impunity for the last 10 years, what is really different now? A signed petition with 12000 signatures?

In the end I blame the Democrats. They were the only ones during Biden's presidency who could have and should have stopped Trump. Instead, Merrick Garland's DOJ went after Hunter Biden. Talk about a ridiculous waste of a once powerful office.

I cannot express the absolute disgust I feel for the people I once respected. THESE were the helpers. When it was up to them, they declined to help.

A British columnist said it best after Harris lost in 2024; "a squirrel should have beaten Donald Trump." And as my dad always said "If the Democrats had a map they couldn't have screwed it up worse."

So until the helpers- like a Democrat led House and Senate (should that occur) decide finally TO DO SOMETHING BESIDES TALK and remove Trump from office, the words are nice, but they are just words. Trump doesn't care about them. And neither does a nation used to a lot of talk and no action where it counts.

The trouble with impeachment is the same irresponsible Republicans who have allowed Trump to continue in his lawlessness are the ones who are directed by the Constitution with impeaching him. I doubt it will ever happen. They are lawless, spineless cowards who care only for their own wealth and well-being, as are the conservative justices on the Supreme Court.
