This was both phenomenal and terrifying. I believe we have to be willing to die to fight this. I am 76 year old grandmother, Democrat forever. What should I do? I’m in groups that are planning and facilitating rallies, making calls every day…What do I do???

Right now I’m trying to tell women to watch the Congress for movement on this bill. It is supposedly to make sure only citizens vote. The problem is many women do not have a passport or their name on their birth certificate doesn’t match their legal name now. While it is aimed at voting, proving citizenship under this regime could be demanded at any time for other purposes.

As of last year, only 5 states on the northern border issued Enhanced Real IDs that indicate citizenship. A lot of hoops of course.

Another route is easy in my state - changing legal names back to maiden names. The biggest hassle is getting enough certified copies to all the places it must be changed. Even my husband says it may be the best thing to do because even if it doesn’t pass, who knows what our veto-proof legislature might try.

The League of Women Votes opposes this as do other groups. Fact Checkers say it is too vague. https://www.factcheck.org/2025/02/will-save-act-prevent-married-women-from-registering-to-vote/

Regardless, making sure all potential voters can vote should be on our radar.
