Thank you Catherine. Flag day is special to me for two main reasons: My father a wounded WWII veteran was born on Flag Day. He was always very proud of that. He treasured and honored our Democracy. His grandparents were farm workers near Rome and died young. He was so thankful his Aunt brought his father at age 7? legally to the US.
My father and his 3 brothers were all volunteers to fight in WWII. They all survived❤️
At his funeral in 2008 I was presented with our US flag during a special ceremony held for veterans when they die.
It is framed hanging on my wall with his Dog Tags ID.
My father who shares Trumps birthday was nothing like the grotesque anti-democracy person Trump is.
He was honest, hopeful, worked hard and taught me never to give up.
His proudness for being born in Flag Day has carried over into my being.
Sorry for your loss even though it was years ago. I know it never really leaves you . Leading with integrity and service for humanity is a powerful way to state things and definitely not what we currently have. Hopefully the "No Knigs " movement will continue until we get things righted to a stronger and more respectful United States. It is going to take a lot wow work. But this is the beginning. It has worked when we as americans stood up against tyranny and it will work again.
My dad and his younger brother were in the Army. My dad lied about his age to enlist in WW II. He was shot in Germany in the back and was a paraplegic. The only thing he could not do is walk. He drove one of the first cars in the US with hand controls. He passed when I was 16. His younger brother was career military and went to West Point, taught at West Point, did 3 tours of Viet Nam and finished at the Pentagon. When he passed about 3 years after my dad passed, I went to his funeral in DC and saw the riderless horse with th cason and his grave overlooks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There is a gate named after him at Ft Belvoir. I know in my heart of hearts they would be mortified bt the current status of our country and the DOD disgraceful behavior as well as the current leadership of our country. I empathize with how you are feeling today as I feel it too.
I think of the flag as part of the pride I’ve always had being proud to being an American. These days I feel betrayed by the people who think that what is going on is ok. People I know and love are some of the betrayers and it breaks my heart. I’m ashamed to say I’m an American with the current regime. The flag does give me the hope that it’s not too late and to keep fighting for American ideals. I would like to thank all of you for fighting alongside of me. Stay safe and protest peacefully so as not to give them any reason to validate their betraying beliefs.
Unfortunately the flag is showing its ugly side since 2016 . The fact that we’ve allowed a felon to be in the White House is alarming and it’s a sign of an uneducated and dark population. We have a lot of unraveling to do and it’s affected the world . Not just our country .
It’s another stain for the History ..of the United States. What could be a glorious example to others has turned out to be just another very dark time for Americans. Our Country has the reputation of wide spread racism as well.. which has been part of our history and it’s still present to this day. I Remember as a child of being acutely aware of this . I knew in my heart that something was wrong and it was disturbing to me. As a 12 year old I stopped putting my hand on my heart during the pledge of allegiance .. I found it disturbing to pledge to a flag as I saw the world as one. The wisdom of the child .
Just since 2016? Where were you in the years since 1945 when the USA was invading and murdering millions across the globe? You're only embarrassed by Trump, not the psychotic liars and murderers before and after?
This is why ALL Americans are responsible for America's crimes against other nations, and yourselves.
Fly an American flag🇺🇸 as you stand up for the Constitution and against tyranny and fascism.
We must stop surrendering our Flag to American fascism as it is an incredibly potent weapon of hearts and minds - no matter how some people feel about its history.
There's good company of pro-democracy movement leaders embracing the messaging power of our Flag. Civic leaders such as MLK, Suffragists, Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta embraced the messaging power of our flag in their pro-democracy actions. The modern pro-democracy movement needs to intentionally reclaim the non-verbal messaging power and symbolism of our American flag as one fight for our country. Doing so will also help brand the pro-democracy movement as patriotic and American - and more than “anti-Trump” and make our rallies, marches, and resistance the definition of American values. Most folks are still figuring out “which side” they are on, and the flag resonates positively with the vast majority of Americans.
🇺🇸I will be carrying an American flag at my town’s protest today. I feel like MAGA has tried to steal our flag for themselves and their nationalist hate but I’m really tired of that. The American flag is a patriotic symbol of democracy and freedom for ALL of us, including each of us who is here for a better life, no matter where we came from. May we keep our democracy, and may we root out this fascist nightmare. 🇺🇸
The flag is a physical symbol of the USA. It is a placeholder, not the actual thing. So when (for example) hyper-symbolists state, "men and women fought and died for that flag!" My personal response (if I respond at all), is that anyone who dies for a piece of colored cloth is a fool. I seriously doubt anyone has ever done that. What men and women HAVE actually fought and died for, is the institution and values our flag represents. Unfortunately, physical symbols lack the sort of objective arbitration of disagreements that the written word enjoys by way of dictionaries and lexicons. Therefore, physical symbols are always fraught to a certain degree.
What "values" does that flag represent? Hegemony? Oppression? Land grabs? Wholesale murder of civilians by the Millions? Rampant capitalism? Racism? Xenophobia? Nuclear blackmail? Assassinations and regime change operations? Election meddling? Onlyfans? School shootings?
Yes, such an admirable record of accomplishments to "celebrate" with a temporary flag in wait of another stripe or star commemorating the subjugation of yet another people.
I choose to believe that the flag represents the values set forth in the Declaration Of Independence and the Constitution. These are aspirational values to be sure. And we have fallen fall short. But your take strikes me as overly cynical. But hey, you do you.
A symbol of the country that WAS a beacon of liberty to the rest of the world. It is now disrespected by those claiming to believe in freedom. I find it ironic that many recognize it as a symbol of freedom yet don’t give it the respect that it deserves both in deed and in display. I remain strong and resolute, however my soul weeps daily at what I see in my country.
I am reminded of an emblematic biblical character, Nachshon, or Naashon, whichever you prefer…a tribal Judean leader who was the first to part and cross the Red Sea when his fellow Israelites were too afraid to try and felt there was no escape. In this moment, EACH of us can channel our own Nachshon…, ie, summon our courage and portage across the great divide of fear and autocracy. In this effort, our flag can and will serve to remind us of the courage that is required and that unites us against tyranny and fear, both individual and collective.
Nachshon has been my ‘whisperer’ during every trial and tribulation. I tell myself…”Just Nachshon it!”…LOL. May we all find courage and strength with our flag as our Nachshon…our protector, our hero, our friend, in honor of which I sometimes remember the Neil Diamond song lyrics…”Hello, My Friend, hello. Just called to let you know. I think about you every night, and I know it’s late, but I couldn’t wait…Hello.”
Lies. Your flag represents none of those things. You can't claim to represent "freedom" while invading and bombing people across the globe for 200+ years, and stamping out freedom of speech against genocide at home.
What a Gong Show...you people actually believe that shit? 🙄
Since this was posted, we now have two Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota gunned down in their own homes by somebody posing to be a police officer
Killing the one woman congressman and her husband
Wounding the other
It was found that he had a list of 70 other Democrats in his car singled out to go murder.
The Trump and Maga toxic dehumanizing devaluing evil rhetoric has created violence in this country against people that do not agree with them
People must keep level heads and nonviolent protests
This is outrageous
Not only are the immigrants the target, but anybody that disagrees with Trump and this crowd that he put into the White House with him
He wanted to pardon the men that were found guilty of plotting to kidnap the governor of Michigan.
None of this is right and everybody needs to stay focused on peaceful protest, staying engaged, becoming informed keeping up on what’s going on
To fight this authoritarian fascist takeover of our democracy and destruction of our constitution and of us as Americans being a free people and society .
Thank you so much for all your recent posts, especially today's, inviting us to reflect on the American flag. I am wearing an American flag t-shirt today and am bringing 3 flags to today's protest: one large flag to proudly wave, and 2 smaller upside down flags to represent mounting distress. Although I consider myself a patriot to democracy, I can really empathize with the flag burners of the Vietnam era now more than ever. Peace and loving kindness to all
For the last ten years the American flag has shape shifted into the Confederate flag for me. Folks around here fly it to send a message and it is not love of country or their fellow man. Ever since the fuhrer put his arms around it to rally the ignorant and other folks put his face on it to deface it. We may need a new design.
My chemical engineering father ran a munitions plant in WWII. Before he arrived, the bomb-making process for the dynamite went zonky and an explosion killed many people. My father was the most exact person I've ever known--he measured miles in tenths and liquids in millimeters. Every day he went to work, my mother said she didn't know if he would return. In 1945, he took charge of another plant, in another state, and there was a huge explosion at the plant he had left. .......I don't like Trump and his ilk taking over the American flag. I plan to wear a shirt with a flag on it to the rally today. The flag belongs to me, and you, and everyone in the country.
As a Girl Scout many years ago, I learned about the American flag and the handling of it. More than a piece of cloth, I was instilled with what the flag stood for, for the unity of our nation and the individuals that encompass it; each star, each stripe singular yet placed together to symbolize the United States. While on a scout camping trip, I took past in the Color Guard which lead a flag burning ceremony. We retired the flag from its pole and reverently folded it into a star. We then placed it on the campfire, the entire troop solemnly standing at attention while it burned. I like to think that the old flag may have been destroyed by the flames, but those flames and eventual ashes only reignited the ideals, aspirations and hope that the flag represents.

"Always lead with integrity and service for humanity" sounds like a solid summary of what we should expect from leaders. Thanks.

1.
Some unethical lawyers are empowering Trump's illegality(aka crowning Trump as King)
2.
Disbarment isn't severe enough punishment for these lawyers, but...
... should they be forced to renounce the crown by covering the crown with a skin graph from their own skin(aka "skin in the game")?
3.
The uncovering of skin from the crown (of the penis) is known as "circumcision"... so the covering of the crown with skin should be called "UNcircumcision"

Me:"Asking bar associations to investigate &Dump numnuts is a good means of uncircumsizing Traitors so they lack keys to power..."
Note re "uncircumsizing"... uncircumsizing refers to covering the crown(male anatomy literally designated "corona") with THE SKIN OF THE PERPETRATOR.
The evolutionary origins of the corona seem to be sabotage:

Teri, I’m so grateful you shared this, and the details of the procession. What an amazing family!
I’m sorry for the suffering he endured and bless him.
My father too, would be utterly devastated seeing the cruel malignancy of the Trump administration.
What a terrible loss At any age but at 16, heart rendering I’m sure.
We need each other.
We all are in this together.
We are the Majority.
We need to embrace hope as you indicated and never give up.
Thank you again.

Thank you for your empathy and for your words of Hope and encouragement, Teri.
It means a great deal to me.

Aware of it all

It means we the people gained the right not to have a king
A betrayal to its people who fought for all our freedoms. Ever since this and its prior administration showed up. I’ll never fly it again
That just gives them a win. We have to fight to take back OUR flag and have it fly for independence
We do..
