“It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.” - James Baldwin

And here we are…

I agree with that. Ignorance is impossible to deal with.

I think Biden was a good President. Our economy was and is today better than a few years ago. He was not a person who lied each time he opened his mouth. He did not set out to do the country harm. He has character and morals.

The DEms could have done some things different.

Let’s all hope the next 4 years are not as bad as some are predicting.

Thanks for the spotlight on this, Steven. And around here, I read opinion letters accusing KAMALA HARRIS (!) of trying to buy the election! I live in political HELL!

Expand full comment

One of many points Kamala should have made. Maga was never about helping the poor or middle class. It has always been about stealing from public funds. Trump said e was a snake with contempt for his prey. The masses loved him because the demagogue was entertaining. And the Ds just fought about how senile Biden was. And Biden didnt care. They handed the election to him on a silver platter.

Expand full comment

Right. Every Democrat who said Biden was incompetent, a few short months before the election, echoed what Fox was saying. And they handed the election to Trump. So much for the great legislation. Even the democrats ignored that. Democrats who attacked Biden were Trumps most significant ally. Talk about 3 dimensional chess. Attack your nominee and then be amazed when you lose. When will they ever learn.

A lot of those comments regarding concerns about Biden were for over a year. He is the one who said he would be a one term president. He and his campaign staff were the ones who lied and said he was competent and able to win and survive another 4 years. He is the one who put us in this position. Did you watch the debate or have you conveniently forgotten that he could not put a single coherent sentence together in his opening remarks - AND it went downhill from there. I respect and appreciate his 50+ years of public service and the many accomplishments during his term, but you're in denial if you think his and his campaign's lies for over a year are anyone else's fault for pointing this out. They ceded the effing truth about his mental ability to the biggest liar in American history. He and his campaign are the ones who left Kamala - a forced selection due to her name being on the ticket - to run a presidential campaign in 107 days, 3 1/2 months, when Trump had 2 years. His and his campaign's decision to run meant no real primary election to select a candidate, perhaps Kamala, perhaps not, and actually run a full/normal length campaign. And forcing her to use his inept campaign staff.

But sure, anyone who said he was incompetent when responding to the obvious truth and cover up by him and his campaign, are the ones who handed this to Trump. It's The Nile, not Denial.

Not saying you are wrong. Yes, the debate was a disaster. And it reflected on-going problems. D's covered it up before and denied the country a real candidate. Then Biden imploded and still delayed withdrawal. Then the only message the D's had was that Biden is and WAS incompetent. Not saying he wasn't. I'm saying the D's are responsible, corporately and individually, for knowingly allowing this to happen and then confirming -- "on yeah, you're right, he is incompetent, but we didn't know till the debate.' So get him out a here. With no real options for the party which was now tarnished by having supported what was clearly and unequivocally a loser -- BEFORE the election. It is criminal.

Thanks JBR. We were left with little choice. A lot of factors resulted in the loss, but the whole way this was handled was a huge problem.

I think some of the ammo and more certainly issues came from within the campaign. Too many corporatists and too many advisors/managers with their own agendas. Too good at vacuuming up $$ and steering policies in their direction.

Well Steven…Your words today blasted one totally “Out-of-the-Park!” The only thing left to add would be a photo editing of the accompanying picture with musk, who one will notice is standing in front of trump, holding up a Bill of Sale for America marked “paid-in full” and signed by trump.

I wonder now what all the ?’s who voted for “Benidict Arnold” are thinking? “Should I swallow this mouth full S%$t rather than admit I made a really stupid mistake when I voted!” Don’t forget to brush!!!!

Now what do the rest of us Schleps do???????

Good insight. Another example of MAGAs being so stupid as to not realize how they are going to be screwed by their choice. Just like the deportation, loss of health care, tariffs, having Mucks and Ramasmarmy in positions of authority will hurt nearly every American, including MAGAts.

Breathtakingly stupid

Expand full comment

Many MAGA voters are willfully ignorant about impacts on them personally (particularly financial ones). they don't want to know because they love their anger more - especially when they don't have much else. Or they are convinced they are better off because of things actually accomplished during the Biden admin. Isn't there a way coalitions can fund, now, brief ads on mainstream media (make it good for at least something) regarding what is happening to them directly, in a way that even a child can understand - little stick men (with red hats?) carrying their dollars (labeled labor costs, cuts to entitlements, etc) to place in a tax cut pile at the feet of the cronies of XXXX. Also, being sure to start pressuring XXXX continually starting now, that he HAS to comply with the law to disclose his net worth by no later than May 2026, i.e. no lawyer shenanigans to delay, delay. Will be great for the midterms. We have to stop being passive and paralyzed - there are ways we can take the fight to them now without coming to blows.

When all the efforts come to cut real programs to fund billionaire tax cuts, this needs to be confronted and spotlighted aggressively.

Absolutely Steven.

My idea is to use our postcard infrastructure for this too. Target Republicans and Independents. I have started suggesting this to various advocacy organizations. If you like the idea I urge you to lobby them as well.

Good Jill. That tells it like it is. Elon Go back home. Leave TRump alone. Leave USA. WE CAN MANAGE WITHOUT YOUR INPUT INTO OUR cOUNTRY.

It will be quite interesting to keep our eyes on Musk. It appears he has inserted himself into our lives without our consent. This entire situation we have is troubling to say the least.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are creating a ruling oligarchy, aided by all the billionaires in his cabinet. These people are totally out of touch with the struggles of average Americans, and what's worse, they could not care less.

Expand full comment

They really do not care. It’s the least of the worries what pain they are causing the majority of the people in our country.

“[a] lot of fun”—as in it’s gonna be. Well, of course! This is The Three Amigos, rolling in more money than they know what to do with. Do they care about those their intolerance will hurt? The millions and millions of Americans? Of course not! They care about damaging those who say mean things about them.

Expand full comment

This is beyond appalling, all of it. I'm wondering how long it will take to see two things start to happen (and I can't wait):

1. How long will it take the MAGA base to realize that Trump has been using them as cannon fodder?

2. How long will it take before Trump starts demanding that Musk and the other reprehensible oligarchs around him start giving him large chunks of their wealth as the price of doing business?

Expand full comment

It will happen.

Ironically, in one of his rallies, he clearly stated, "I don't care about you, I just need your vote." If that didn't wake them up, not so sure how they will get outside of their echo chamber long enough to realize who is the cause of their pain, because all they will hear is this was Biden's fault and he's just trying to fix it.

Neither Trump nor Muck [sic] can get along with people. Mark my words, this "relationship" will implode.

Elon Musk came to America, took all it offered, now wants to destroy it.What an ego. Pictures kneeling praying, sitting on church pews, holding Bibles, showing off Mom, has that male thing, need to replicate himself, so far 12 times, offering to do Taylor Swift, building a compound in Texas for his women & babies. Firing X people like he intends to fire thousands of civil servants.

The Democrats better find some gumption, some imagination & get going on the 2026 election. Some billboards, TV ads with head shots ( Musk first) above them written Two Billionaires, Two Presidents. What will they do for you.Gas & groceries going up? Thanks Elon & trump. Will you miss your social security,Medicare? Awwwww! Pictures of both & between them donald's words " So what?"

How about some interviews of Schiff, Schumer, Raskin, Duckworth in the halls of Congress that would make newscasts? And always emphasize how Musk is the important one. Thin skinned trump's head & stomach would churn. Anything that will cause trump to break off this relationship & rile other members of this pack of rats . Democrats - at least make an effort. Or are you, too, afraid of retribution?

So far, all I have rec'd from the Democrat Party are requests for money. When you do the same things, you get the same results.

I have to wonder if one of the main goals for Musk isn’t for the big billionaire to keep the little ones outside Donnie’s cabinet scurrying around vying for a bit of favor. After all, it is a fake department that by its own name promotes his - not any other - crypto. It will be looking out for his interests perhaps balanced by a need to keep Donnie happy; dirtying his hands as Donnie says whatever on whatever day.

Like other authoritarians donnie doesn’t want anyone to have too much of “his” power. Musk is saddled with Ramaswamy and Marjorie in a non-governmental entity. (Marjorie is in it for the headlines. Want to bet she’ll be reporting directly to Donnie?)

There’s to be a report from these characters after a year. The other activities appear more rhetorical, punctuated by plans for frequent podcasts. Rhetoric has power. Power to frighten; power to numb and normalize; power to move markets and power to sic the rabid on “enemies.” The biggest power may be the ability to flood the zone making it difficult to know what matters and therefore more difficult to resist.

Worst case scenario, Americans begin to view this as a legitimate way to conduct the duties of government.

(I feel compelled to add, Musk’s big SpaceX event was not a total success. Lost in the deluge of news, hubbub over Donnie’s presence & great video — The rocket launched but splashed down instead of returning to its launch tower. The “biggest ever” booster stage could not be recovered. The Last year according to SpaceAmerica Musk admitted to a 50% shortfall for lunar mission payloads by Starship.)

More like, “What Elon Musk’s Billions Has Wrought “—Musk apparently believes, like Trump, his money endows an unstated aristocracy. Bought into Trump for $226 million … Trump gladly took, with his patented, meaningless grin; will soon, I predict, be swatted down. This universe ain’t big enough for me the two of us.

I thought our (perhaps toothless) campaign finance laws prohibited or limited contributions by government contractors. In any case, Musk is as big a stain on our society as Trump. He and Ramaswamy are a fine pair of scoundrels.
