Honesty. Truthfulness. Logic. Responsible regard for the common good. Respect for the rule of law. Humble wisdom to seek counsel superior to his own.

Good list, W.R.

Sounds like it makes too much sense.

I should have added the ability to forge workable compromise by good faith negotiations based on fact, reason and the art of the possible in making ideals real.

Look at 457 and do exactly the opposite.

THE NARCISSISTS VERSUS THE GULLIBLES

All California lawyers are members of Calbar.ca.gov including John Eastman. It took 5 years for them to disbar John Eastman. California lawyers can mitigate this stain on their profession by insisting that all lawyers submit to the narcissism personality inventory test under Sodium Pentothal truth serum. Since there are lawyers on both sides of a conflict and one side loses, half of attorneys are defending evil and we must put a check on their power to sustain democracy?

A person of moral integrity, respect for the dignity and welfare of citizens, humility, truthfulness, declines all deals to enrich his/herself or family members while in office, no evidence of abuse of women, loves and preserves nations laws and Constitution.

Honesty, but the degree to which it has been lost leaves us stunned. Civility please or we cannot speak, negotiate and be understood.

A fundamental understanding of government as it was designed. Each of us is required to take citizenry far more seriously than we have in the past. We cannot merely watch. We are necessary to the process.

Examples of good leaders: sure miss Obama and Biden!

Trump espouses the seven deadly sins so look at each and every one of his traits and do a 180 to get the qualities of a good leader.

So many good qualities listed here by other readers! 🙌 I can add only two. Servant leadership and vision for the future. It takes someone with a substantial ego to even want the job, much less survive it, so you might think that service and caring about others might be irreconcilable with the kind of person who seeks a position of power. Mayor Mamdani is one example of someone who puts service to his city above himself. I think he exemplifies the qualities cited above by others too.

To add to Dr. Joe, Carolyn, and W.R., appreciation and understanding of those who had the role before and met the needs of their time and their people; a passion to fulfill promises made to those who voted for him; empathy for others; understanding that money does not make a human a more valuable being; the capacity to be a good human being; the ability to tell the truth; full mental capacity for the role; antipathy for hate; the ability to apologize for mistakes, acknowledging mistakes, and showing warmth toward those who support our country. I could go on for hours...

Humility. With that as foundation, the other necessary qualities are likely to be in place. (Or at least most of them.)

Get out of the way when what you’re doing is not working and you don’t have any better ideas. And make sure the people you choose to do your bidding will not do it if you’re breaking the law, denying the truth, or ignoring the facts. And don’t make jokes that ridicule, demean, or belittle another. Follow the rules. BTW, the Constitution is our country’s rule book.

Literally the exact opposite of everything Trump and the Republicans stand for

We need some one who is kind, decent, law-abiding, tolerant, loving, competent, and believes in giving everyone a chance

Just like Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and every democrat who is served as president

I would add the ability and willingness to learn as they go and a grounding in (and appreciation or respect for) the political, military, social, economic, and cultural history that preceded them. One person I particularly enjoy hearing from is Gen. Mark Hertling, who has taken what he knows about leadership into new arenas.

General Hertling is impressive. I also admired General Mark Milley for his leadership and courage in standing up to Trump.

Telling the truth to the American people is the most important thing a good leader can do and Trump never does that. I admire Elizebeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and AOC as they are working hard to help Americans address problems, such as the high cost of living and the absence of affordable healthcare and they are trying to prevent the current government from being so corrupt too!

A good leader should have core values, not to exclude a coherent political philosophy that can be enacted into policies that help the majority. Of course stuff like inquisitiveness, critical thinking skills, keen intelligence, and empathy are icing on the cake.

What bothers me most, almost on a daily basis, is that this nincompoop might be a partial reflection of us, as Americans. At least enough of us to get elected. This is THE issue that must be overcome.
