Invite Trump to a journalism dinner is a big mistake. It doesn't show camaraderie, it just shows that they don't take his attacks on free press seriously enough. We need independent media more than ever
This is a disgrace but not a surprise. The billionaires have bought most of the media outlets. They provide the fuel forTrump’s agenda via huge donations to make oil king, make the planet toxic for us all and destroy an America where once everyone had at least a fighting chance to succeed. Trump and his billionaire buddies in it for the money . It’s all about them; they have no concern for the welfare of America or its people.
Right you are, Ann Marie. Yet I fear that this gathering will be yet another missed opportunity among many for these adjudicated criminals to be rounded up, arrested and properly made to answer for their crimes.
Although it will never happen...it would certainly be a slap in the face that would push tRump's blood pressure up. Hopefully the "Freedom of speech/free Press Pocket Squares" will make their point as well.
Yes, out of custom he should be invited. What should not have happened is acquiesced to his demands for his attendance.
His hatred for the press is well documented. So none of the more recent attacks should be surprising to anyone. What is surprising, and shocking, is the complete capitulation by the legacy media. They have made a mockery of a vital part of our society. Their predecessors are rolling in their graves or are in complete shock at what the industry has become.
My understanding is that trump is going to hobble off immediately after completing his remarks. What the attendees should do is as soon as he is introduced is to get up, en masse, and leave. I realize that some organizations will not, such as FOX, CBS, and WAPO.
I always watched the dinner and enjoyed the comedian and comments by the president. This year I will be boycotting the show. I hope lots of people join me.
"Will the legacy media ever learn?" Not in my lifetime. Not as long as there is money and power, and money and power NOW, for them. Kicking that responsibility can down the road for more immediate comfort.
There remain good journalists everywhere in the world and it is more than OK to celebrate journalism by any and all means that promotes ethical, objective professional journalism, by whomever it is carried out.
That said, the CBS journalist in charge who extended the invite to the US’s worst regime members indeed made terrible error… that is, if her job description includes protecting and promoting the integrity of the profession. Having those regime officials lurking among actual journalists is not the same as having Obama or Bush there. The Trump cabal is to previous 21st and 20th century administrations what Hannibal Lecter is to fine dining.
I say scrap the whole idea of inviting any administration officials of any administration to the dinner. Celebrate journalists, not the folks the report on. And bring back the comedians, who are these days, unofficial journalists!
There is no legacy media in this country any more. We only have legacy propaganda outlets. The only media I entertain are those who wouldn't be caught dead at a fallacy such as this. You will NOT see ProPublica there; Judd Legum won't go; can't imagine any Substack writers got an invite. So these fascists can gorge themselves into oblivion, as far as I'm concerned.
Our opinion of “legacy media” is that it no longer has a legacy of factual reporting but of partisan propaganda that parrots whatever the Trump “administration” wishes. Money has spoken to them and journalistic integrity (for those in attendance who might have once had it) has flown out the window.
No one who believes in what the 4th Estate is *supposed* to stand for will attend this dinner and sit with the wannabe king and his court jesters. One does not dine with one’s enemy.
Leaving a legacy means providing ever increasing quality journalism that provides truthful and unfettered information to the populace. What is now left behind is less than a shadow of what was envisioned when Freedom of the Press was embedded into our Constitution. That’s not a legacy, it’s a tragedy and the key players are rich people who seem to view their outlets for profits and support of the president, certainly not for providing truthful news and commentary.
A stupid event, all about getting along and moving up. They probably thought he would decline-stupid to even think of asking him. If they don’t savage him, pleading politeness, they cement their reputations as craven inside players.😡
If we had the press we had when I was growing up in the Watergate era, some of them might stand up, turn their backs, and walk out when Trump took the podium. Wouldn't it be grand to even be able to pretend such a thing could still happen? I doubt any serious observer is holding his or her breath. And now, when such a gesture is needed more than ever.
Thanks Steven: NO. Talk about inviting the enemy into your bunker. Just inviting the likes of Trump, Hegseth, Stephen Miller along with Brendan Carr would be a no show for me. Have they no self respect.?? The main street media masochist will all be there. No comedian, how dry is that They say the dinner is rather blase and uninteresting just like some of their news coverage they spew out.
It’s unfortunate there’s no comedian as they are often the truth tellers who risk everything by highlighting the corrupt autocracy that is now running the USA. They often display the much-needed courage and chutzpah that others don’t.
Quite a few commenters have already suggested that "legacy media" doesn't adequately describe what the mainstream media have become. "Mainstream" doesn't do it justice either. "Corporate media" comes a lot closer, and I don't think it's what the founders had in mind when they drafted the First Amendment. In fact, "the press" in their day somewhat resembled today's independent media scene: many local and regional outlets of various sizes that do their best to report, analyze, and publish "the news." The differences are significant, however, and so is the size of the country!
As long as GOP Billionaires own over 90% of Corporate Media-we will not receive accurate or ethical journalism...& if the Elliosn acquire CNN-they are finished-for good
The rise of Independent Media & seeking out international sources like The Independent & The Guardian do provide US with trustworthy news
We started Boehlert Media Busters in memory & to honor the late great journalist Eric Boehlert
We send hours posting truth & exposing Trump/GOP/MAGA lies, gaslighting, propaganda & BS
Trump is a CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER TO US & every day they fail to act puts all Americans in peril
Unfortunately the attendance of press members is not a case of cluelessness, it’s a case of collaboration with the regime. They’re now in it with him—if they don’t want the public to assume that they wouldn’t be there. It’s a show of force by the press that now think they have joined forces with those in power. Thank god for independent journalism!
I don’t know which would be a better and more visible protest: skipping the event altogether or having some of the speakers take it directly to Trump with powerful words about how he has transformed the press into his handmaiden and negated the freedom and truthfulness of the press?
Yes, Trump should have been invited. It is their party and I am not a member. However, it is entirely consistent with MSM. I do not get my news from any of them. Not since Trump I. I rely on you, HCR, Reich, and others to give a truthful opinion. Add Borowitz, Tiedrich, and Telnaes and I have fed my non-MAGA need to be informed.

Letting a CBS pawn make the invitation is horrible. You might as well put Hannity in charge.
When Trump begins to insult the media tonight and he will. They should all standup and leave the event.
And, they won’t
